Gianni Mimmo / Ove Volquartz - Say When [Aut Records 118]

Released via the ever expanding Jazz x Free Improv and beyond imprint that is Aut Records as their cat.no. 118 on December 8th, 2k24 is "Say When", the latest collaborational album effort cooked up by Gianni Mimmo and Ove Volquartz. Combining the sound of soprano sax, flute and bass as well as contrabass clarinets over the course of six extended pieces and a total playtime of roughly 50 minutes the Italo-Germanic duo starts with a fascinating instrumental dialogue blurring the boundaries between enchanted score works and skittish pixies, elements of Modern Classical composition and lively Improv with a notion of tongue-in-cheek Jazz in the not so reluctant opening cut "Stay Reluctant" subsequently followed by the ethereal and playful beauty of "Athena Amidst The Olive Trees" which reveals the calmer, deeper, yet not less thrilling side of the duos ever flowing and meandering creative works whereas "More Than One Threshold" explores a more droning, nocturnal and solemn attitude in Jazz slightly referencing, yet not diving deeper into DarkJazz for many a reason, just to name a few.
