Andreas Davids - Deep Space [DIY003]

Put out on the circuit on December 5th, 2k24 as a limited edition rectangular Mini-CD is "Deep Space", the latest DIY self-released project by Andreas Davids - better known to many under his Industrial / EBM / HardTechno moniker Xotox - which soon will be a highly sought after collectors item with only 25 hand-numbered physical copies available, all housed in a stamped gatefold card which in itself is house in a sealed - yes, wax! - envelope. Musically, Mr. Davids once again explores a realm of brittle, icey, ever floating and most beautiful Ambient structures with this one, evoking memories of classic science fiction storytelling and, obviously..., deep space exploration whilst also paying homage to early Synth protagonists and pioneers which paved their way for Ambient music as it is today throughout the Berlin School and New Age / EsoAmbient era of the 80s. X.D.D. - Vol. 09 [X-Static Dance Department 009 Promo]

Put out on the digital circuit via the artist run label that is X-Static Dance Department on July 26th, 2k24 is "Vol. 09", the ninth consecutive two track single produced by X.D.D.. Starting with "Snaak Snaak" X.D.D. caters a raw, distorted, stomping and slightly lo-fi sounding repetetive Techno / Rave affair backed by razor sharp hi-hats somewhat reminiscent of the many releases emerging from the Italian scene in the early 90s for an opening cut whereas the subsequent tune named "Random Pulses" turns out to be a relentlessly marching and stab-heavy HypnoAcid meets DarkRave workout backed by grinding basslines as well as hypercompressed muscular drums for illegal basement sessions and therefore turns out to be our favorite cut on this one.

Mike Majkowski - November [Gusstaff Records]

Also released on November 22nd, 2k24 via the ever active Polish label that is Gustaff Records is "November", part two of a corresponding twin album set produced and composed by Australian musician Maik Majkowski. Consisting of two extended pieces - "Mood" and "Echo" - rolled out over roughly half an hour playtime we see Majkowski focusing on what is described as 'solo electronics' in the accompanying press sheet, bringing forth a deeply calming, nocturnal and well meditative take on Ambient music comprised of what could be described as a minimalist, yet harmonic array of gong tones of probably SouthEast Asian origin in the albums first half whereas the second transfers this approach to a more subdued and slightly Dark Ambient-leaning level, shifting the gong tones to the back end of the mix whilst drowning them in organic, yet ground trembling bass drones and low end pulses and adding skeletal metallic clangs for a stripped down and somewhat irregular rhythmic element being blown over from afar. A beauteous and highly recommended sonic journey about to end up on heavy rotation with avid fans of organic Deep Listening Music for a reason.

Mike Majkowski - August [Gusstaff Records]

Put out on the circuit via the Polish Gusstaff Records label on November 22nd, 2k24 is "August", the first outing of a twin album set conceived, performed and produced by Australian double bass player Mike Majkowski in Berlin in 2k23. Over the course of four compositions rolled out over a total playtime of approximately 34 minutes Majkowski explores the sonic possibilities of his instrument of choice as a sole point of focus, opening with the warm and comforting drones and subdued tribal rhythms of "Shine" which are followed by "Wave", a take on a similar landscape which provides a slightly more dynamic profile and range in the ebb and flow of sonic events. Furthermore "Air" has Mr. Majkowski on a deep dive into fluttering, brittle Drone Ambient backed by single plucked bass strings as a minimalist rhythmic foundation before the final cut that is "Still" weighs in nervous uptempo bowing techniques, icey Ambient drones and more distinct minimal plucked DarkJazz rhythm signatures for an experienced and Avantgarde-informed audience. A recommended album for fans and followers of Deep Listening Music and Electroacoustic experimentation, this.

Torgeir Vassvik & Juhani Silvola - White [Eighth Nerve Audio 014]

Coming in from the offices of the Juhani Silvola-run label that is Eighth Nerve Audio these days is "White", the most recent collaboration between the labels head honcho and Sami / Norwegian composer x musician Torgeir Vassvik who, over the course of eight compositions and roughly 38 minutes of total playtie, develop a new take on traditional indigenous Sami music fused with Finnish-Norwegian avantgarde, evoking immediate memories of Eyeless In Gaza ca. 1981 with the opening tune "Royal Malabar" and its deep, dreamy and certainly inward-looking PostPunk approach, followed by the similarly deep, yet rather shamanic and spiritual vocalisms on "The Ritual", the highly dramatic, doomed layering of twangy guitars and ancient drones in the ever climaxing "Restless" before "In The Intertidal Zone" probably best reflects the original and supposedly sonically descriptive nature of Sami joiking as a musical tradition and technique due to its seemingly rather spontaneous and improvisational nature. With "Photosynthesis" the duo of Vassvik & Silvola once again harks back to the droning experimental PostPunk vibe of Eyeless In Gaza from our perspective whilst "Ancestors Push" weighs in a distinctly nocturnal instrumental Folk Noir feel bordering on dark'ish Post-PostRock at times whereas the tender and comforting interlude that is "That Girl" enters the spiritual realm of Sami dreamtime with its atmospheric and oftentime reverberating and score'esque sonic landscapes and the concluding "The Mountain Is Crying", in parts seemingly mirroring the vocal expressions of its predecessor, brings forth hypnotic rhythmic repetitions and subtle NoiseRock infusions for those who know. A highly fascinating and therefore recommended album, this.

Combat Killer - Combat Troops EP [Fresscode Records 018 Promo]

Put out on the digital circuit via Fresscode Records on August 16th, 2k24 is the "Combat Troops EP" which marks the third release for the Combat Killer project on the label since its first appearance in 2k18. Opening with the title track that is "Combat Troops" Combat Killer presents a grinding, heavily distorted take on reverberating peaktime Techno garnished with repetetive Acid loops and a playful, tongue-in-cheek 8bit lick as a main motif, followed by "No Chance For Peace", a relentless uptempo interpretation of hounded, breathtaking HardTechno madness sporting intense, braincell-wrecking freeform modulations for the headstrong whereas the final cut named "Lautlose Invasion" caters more of a straightforward, stab-heavy Techno affair speaking to all those who still refer to cuts like "Red 3" as an alltime classic for a reason.

GMM - Wesele [Gusstaff Records]

Put out on the circuit via the Polish Gusstaff Records imprint on November 15th, 2k24 is "Wesele", the latest musical effort conceived by the trio named GMM which aims to bring new life to Folk wedding melodies from the region of Mazovia, revamping them for a new age and audience, even adding touches of electronic and electroacoustic instrumentation and - sic! - beatboxing techniques to probably centuries old traditional pieces. This new, radical and innovative approach leads to fascinating cuts like the banging, undeniably Dubstep-infused opening tune "Warkocz" which is about to set not only wedding dancefloors on fire for a reason, subsequently followed by the sparse electronic doom drums, subdued background pianos and melancholic double bass clarinet melodies of "Zastrukom", the hypnotic wobbly vintage synth tones and seductive, mysterious bass pulses of the surely Dub-informed cut "Jasienko" as well as the more traditional rhythms and uptempo vibe of "Swacikowie" which are transformed into an edgy, muscular Industrial x Folk fusion cut. With "Rozplataj" we see GMM on a deeply nocturnal and melancholia-inducing tip, even including Field Recordings of bird song along whispered enchanted male vocals in their take on the Folk original whilst "Rozglasaj" once again harks back to shuffled, sluggish Dubstep as a foundation for echo-treated Avantgarde Folk as well as Jazz-leaning experimentalisms alongside light-hearted, glistening motifs and "Taniec" probably is, despite its electronic backings, as close to ancient traditional Folk as it gets on this album, seemingly even incorporating sounds of the rarely heard spinet in its floating and ever comforting sonic range. Furthermore "Suknie" provides 4-2-the-floor based fodder for adventurous Electroswing DJ's whereas "Chmiel" throws elements of Broken Techno and late night ketamine rave into the otherwise Folk-leaning mix before the final cut that is "Marysia" builds up towards a dense, ever intensifying climax, sporting killer synth lines for peaktime dancefloor abuse as well as spooky, haunted and otherworldly vocals for a closing. Quite a thrilling ride, this is.

Stefano Leonardi / Antonio Bertoni - Fuoco Sacro [Aut Records 116]

Coming in via the ever growing Aut Records imprint recently is "Fuoco Sacro", the November 14th, 2k24 released second full length collaboration album conceived by Italian musicians Stefano Leonardi and Antonio Bertoni. With Leonardi once again exploring a global array of traditional flutes and reed instruments and Bertoni weighing in the sounds of various string instruments of African origin as well as an intricate set of percussions the albums outernational meta approach might seem conceptually reminiscent of what could be described as World Music but isn't, instead providing a free floating improvisational angle starting with the almost ritualistic, fever'ish and deeply primordial title track "Fuoca Sacro" whereas the subsequent "Vaporo" seems to reveal a whizzing and whirling take on enchanted FreeJazz variations, the hypnotic "Ricicli" draws inspiration from the ever meandering dances of travelling snake charmers in the Arabian deserts and stories told over the course of centuries around oriental campfires whilst the deeply mysterious, sparse and reverberating percussions of "Al Vento" alongside its beautifully gliding and shifting flute tones set more of a nocturnal tone, with the listeners put into high alert mode for a reason, closely following the sounds of the surrounding environment. Following up is the wildly ecstatic string piece "Nelle Mani" with its wild and untamed bowing techniques accompanied by electrical buzzes, the open widescreen panoramas of "A Tocchetti" which somehow evoke non-existent memories of the elders trecking through mountainous terrain millenia ago whilst the intense "Ribollisce" seems to reflect on ancient ritualistic heights reached under the guidance of shamans and their secret, yet surely psychoactive potions and elixirs just to name a few. A highly thrilling album outing, this. Go check!

Frog Bitch - Voodoo Acid EP [Psychocandies 123 Promo]

Put out on the circuit via Psychocandies on August 23rd, 2k24 is the "Voodoo Acid EP", the latest - and fourth... - digital two track single cooked up by Frog Bitch for the label since the projects debut all the way back in 2017. Opening with the title track "Voodoo Acid" we're drawn into a realm of short repetetive brain melting Acid modulation sequences backed by a driving, yet super raw foundation of distorted drum machine rhythm signatures whilst the second cut named "Last Wave" continues on a similar vibe in terms of providing more super raw, hounded drum machine madness as a rhythmic foundation, yet instead taking its Acid modulations to a more positive, gooey, elastic, playful, hypnotic and almost Trance inducing level despite not being musically related to (Acid)Trance in any way or form. One for all the real underground headz out there.

Xotox - Niemandskind [Infacted Recordings Promo]

Put out on the digital circuit via Infacted Recordings on November 1st, 2k24 is "Niemandskind", the latest single outing by long-standing producer and live act icon Xotox. Opening with the title track "Niemandskind" we see Andreas Davids, the man behind the project, exploring a surprisingly melodic, playful and catchy fusion of Future Pop x Electroclash, Post-EBM and heavily distorted Breakbeat x Breakcore elements which might indicate a new musical direction for the project at this point whereas the subsequent remix variation provided by Rotoskop weighs in additional deep, melancholic piano chords for an intro before following a cleaner, more uplifting ElectroTech path for neon clad cybergoths and their colourful raver friends whilst the additional cut "I Am Safe Here" presents a killer amalgamation of seductive Synthwave x Electroclash bass sequences, abstract, Industrial-infused Broken Beat structures and major noise eruptions for the darkest hours on strobe-lit underground dancefloors. This is quite epic. Go check.

Martin Weinreich - White Flares [Say Blind 001]

Released via the artists very own and freshly launched imprint Say Blind on December 4th, 2k24 is "White Flares", the sophomore album outing by Cologne-based artist x producer Martin Weinreich following up to his 2022 firstling named "Points Of Entry: 1989 - 1995". Rolled out over the course of seven tracks and a total playing time of roughly 22 minutes Weinreich's new outing explores, once again, a take on heavy sample manipulation and transformation bordering on earth shaking, tectonic Dark Ambient with the opening tune that is "Vent" which is followed by the dark and truly unsettling sci-fi atmospheres of "Tunnelling" before "Illuminations Rounds" pairs subdued background movements with eruptive moments of what could be described as glitched out communication attempts - or distress signals... - travelling over thousands of light years only to arrive at the unadressed receivers antenna array in a highly fragmented and hardly decipherable state. Furthermore we see "Red Flares" delve into territories of minimal Dark Ambient backed by rumbling low frequency Industrial Electronics whereas "Vesparax" comes across as bleak and hostile as the surface of an exoterrestrial moon somewhere on the fringes of our solar system, "Tap Internal" taps into unfathomable subsurface horrors hidden deep in gigantic unexplored vaults unbeknownst to mankind whilst the final cut that is "The Flip Side Of The High" sets the listeners nervous system into alarm mode immediately due to its use of tense and grating midrange frequency transmissions, electrical buzzes and ever densening layers of Illbient x Noize related sounds. This is intense. This is limited to a mere 100 copies worldwide. And this is highly recommended for a reason. Go check!

Dr. NoiseM - Studio Works 37 [Dr. NoiseM Tapes Promo]

Released via the artist run and owned imprint Dr. NoiseM Tapes on July 23rd, 2k24 is "Studio Works 37", the 37th - sic! - consecutive longplay outing on the label cooked up by the long standing experimental music activist. Opening with "Closer To The Beginning", the 15 minutes spanning main epos of this digital album, Dr. NoiseM explores a field of strange, otherworldly and ever shifting off-harmonics of rather subdued, muffled and weirdly comforting nature whereas the subsequent "Palindrome" comes at us from a similar angle, yet focuses more on Dark Ambient melancholia and the revival of respiratory sounds which were to be found on a regular in the artists early works, followed by the crackly CutUp x Plunderphonics madness of "Stereo Keyboard" and the raw, spiralling and surprisingly bass heavy Techno of "The Fisting Room" which later is accompanied by a beautiful, almost classical sounding PianoTrance melody. Furthermore "Generation Zero" provides more studies in CutUp x Plunderphonics, this time mostly focused on shredded Heavy Metal guitar solos and so does "The Cut Up World" whilst "The Days Of Eden" basically pairs more respiratory sounds with shimmering, icey and brittle Ambient pads slightly reminiscent of an ancient sunrise over a glacial plateaux. Following up is "The Last Morning", a surprisingly kitsch-y take on meditative, yet somewhat unsettling New Age x EsoAmbient rolled out over 7+ minutes, "Im Angesicht Des Todes" brings forth more intense, metallic and slightly nerve-wrecking structures of probably electro-acoustic nature, well suitable to provide a spine-tingling score for vintage sci-fi horror flics before the final cut named "Fear Your Dreams" takes brooding nocturnal DarkAmbient to a new ritualistic, demonic and surely more dangerous level fro a closing. Good stuff, this!

Tim Brady / Instruments Of Happiness - Imagine Many Guitars [Redshift Records]

Another more recent album put out on the circuit via the Canadian Redshift Records imprint is "Imagine Many Guitars", the latest musical envisionment of Montreal-based guitar player and composer Tim Brady and his collective x ensemble named Instruments Of Happiness. Released on September 27th, 2k24 the longplayer naturally focuses on the guitar as the main instrument - or better: various multiples of it - with the 24+ minutes spanning opener "This One Is Broken In Pieces: Symphony #11" written for a set of eight electric guitars paired and overdubbed with soprano choir vocals which fall together in a scenic, intense, dramatic, yet icey and compositionally bold manner, providing an otherworldly sonic quality surely about to resonate with fans and followers of Japanese anime culture for a reason before even referring to Rock and PostRock in certain sequences. Following up is "Slow, Simple", subtitled 'music for 20 electric guitars", with its dense, ever whirling soundscapes reminiscent of vintage sci-fi scores or - in parts at least - off-kilter viola treatments both in its rather harmonic and drifting as well as its more aggressive segments later replaced by intricate layerings of plucked strings and airy, somewhat nebulous harmonic shifts and echoes of psychedelia-infused Space Rock solos. The following quartet pieces grouped under "Five Times: Four Guitars" keep up with influences of Space Rock and even so-called Kosmische / Berlin School with their floating, in parts twangy and probably New Age-influenced approach before the set of "[Very] Short Pieces For (Jazz) Guitar" from all the way back in 1979 rounds things off with an inward looking, beautiful and most comforting gaze into the composers earliest work and therefore provides an interesting contrast to Brady's contemporary pieces.

Released via Nuke The Planet on September 6th, 2k24 is "Nuke Vol. 20", the latest studio outing for the imprint by the dark underground production force known as THE D3VI7. Over the course of roughly 260 seconds we see THE D3VI7 providing a deadly, relentless and undeniably top drawer fusion of brutalist Gabber violence and quirky, twisted, braincell-mutilating MonoAcid modulations probably even exceeding the magic 180bpm mark by a literal mile. This is straight in your face Hardcore Rave fodder for those who know.

Maxx - Out Of The Blue [La Bomba Recordings 023 Promo]

Put out on the circuit via La Bomba Recordings as the labels cat.no. 023 on August 13th, 2k4 is "Out Of The Blue", the latest digital two track single released by Maxx - which is not the Eurodance project of yore you might think of initially. Opening with the title track that is "Out Of The Blue" Maxx are in for a super bubbly, uplifting, playful and stab driven AcidHouse affair which beams us straight back to the late 80s whereas the second cut on here, "Lost In Space", brings on a fusion of similarly weighted AcidHouse, dreamy modulations and early 90s Lo-Fi Trance for modern retro dancefloors. Lovely.

baze.djunkiii Charts 12/2k24

01. Stefan Goldmann - Scale & Scope [Edition Kymata 002]
All eyes on the format! With "Scale & Scope" we see Stefan Goldmann unleash a 4x Flexdisc 7" set via Edition Kymata, exploring a sonic realm of chiming experimental Ambient and Electroacoustic music with a slightly vintage retrofuturistic twist backed by surprisingly present and all embracing low frequency movements which we thought to be unrepresentable on this specific sound carrier format. Highly recommended.
