Malo Moray & His Inflatable Knee - Atolls [Possibly Sam]

Coming in from Leipzig these days is "Atolls", the new, September 19th, 2k23 released, album by Malo Moray & His Inflatable Knee. Put out on the circuit in a variety of versions, the one we're referring to being a limited to 222 copies black double vinyl version with accompanying cassette, art prints and individually screen printed cover artwork, "Atolls" caters a set of five extended compositions, with three of them obviously spanning an entire side of the album, all following the conceptual idea of layered improvisation with individual tracks, instruments and contributions recorded by all artists invlvd seperately, without ever meeting or playing in the same room at the same time as a band x ensemble or whatever you might call it. The result of this curious approach takes the listener on a journey ranging from the soft, lush and billowing Ambient of the opener "Replying To Unaddressed Letters" which would be a suitable fit for labels like the Greek imprint Sound In Silence to the glistening PopAmbient paired with meandering Post-PostRock movements of "The Clouds, They Move So Slow" before making way for enchanted naturalist Ambient spiked with Field Recordings via the rural Nordic Folk influences of "The Trees, They Grow So Slow" and the whispered, yet a little exaggerated Spoken Word mysticsm of the concluding "Tiny Objects Float Through Space In Elliptic Patterns" completed by the additional cassette track that is "Waiting For The Wood Glue To Dry" which obviously is the most improvised (Dark)Jazz-leaning cut on this album by far. We'd call this organic Deep Listening Music for experienced listeners with an additional and unannounced surprise hidden on the second side of the cassette tape.

Depeche Mode - My Favourite Stranger (Vinegar Hill Sessions)

Probably our favorite Depeche Mode iteration so far after Fletch's passing. This is a vibe.

Sascha Müller - Logical Mind [Proper Cuts Recordings 002]

Scheduled for release on September 29th, 2k23 is Sascha Müller's "Logical Mind", the second outing of the Proper Cuts Recordings label which focuses on highly limited and probably widely unobtainable lathe cut 12" releases for those deeply entrenched in the electronic underground. With his latest one-sided single we see Mr. Müller on a hounded highspeed Techno tip, exploring the outer fringes of the genre with a combination of galopping beats, soft and slightly washed out synth stabs, occasional filter sweeps and an overall attitude of unagitated dancefloor functionality for all the fast mixing DJ folks out there. If normal speed seems a little too much we'd highly recommend to pitch adjust at -8 for a deeper, groovier and slightly 'troitier vibe.

Lotto - Axolotl [Gusstaff Records]

Scheduled for release via the Polish label Gusstaff Records on September 29th, 2k23 is "Axolotl", the first of two - probably very contrary - albums by the trio named Lotto which are supposed to appear on the circuit on the same day. Serving a total of 13 tracks over the course of 35 minutes and with the raw layout for the album already sketched in the second half of 2k21 the band provides quite an insight into their state of mind at the time coming back from a failed tour and going through the inevitable mental aftermath of such an occurrance, building their sound from an array of electronic instruments in combination with electric guitar and oftentimes filtered or heavily processed drums. This sonic approach results in an intense, almost claustrophic mixture of doomed Industrial and Illbient-infused PostRock built upon hypercompressed, overpowering low-end pulses which put any form of contemporary Bass Music to shame, garnished with minimalist Industrial Electronics, air-raid sirens, Plunderphonics-informed collage techniques, grinding slow motion beats which evoke memories of material once cooked up by Spooky The Subliminal Kid, Ice or other like-minded producers for Mille Plateaux' "Electric Ladyland"-series with especially "Middle Names" bringing to mind tunes like Slotek's claustrophobic masterpiece "Electric Soul Controller" whilst the subsequent cut "South Of The Sun" features surprisingly airy and ethereal, yet slightly eerie female non-vocalisms whereas "Room" even seems to be dabbling with subdued DarkJazz of doom to provide a rough layout of what is happening on this album. Excellent and highly recommended - yet not to be played to those suffering from anxiety, depression and similar conditions. Listener discretion is advised.

The Homeraver - Nuke Vol. 17 [Nuke The Planet 017 Promo]

Released via Nuke The Planet on May 25th, 2k23 is "Nuke Vol. 17", the second digital one track single put out on the imprint via The Homeraver. Bringing forth a shrill, hypercompressed variation of relentless, braincell-wrenching Hardcore garnished with most eerie, outerdimensional atmospheres and alien synth sweeps alongside quadruple speed percussion ticks The Homeraver sets the mood right for a unprecedented hakke-massacre - or a school shooting with multiple assault rifles invlvd. All depending on who listens to this one on repeat. Heavy.

Matana Roberts - Coin Coin Chapter Five: In The Garden... [Constellation 170]

Set for release via the Canadian Constellation label on September 29th, 2k23 is "Coin Coin Chapter Five: In The Garden...", the next instalment of what seems to be laid out as a twelve album cycle conceptually envisioned by NYC-based composer x musician x activist x historian Matana Roberts. With each chapter of the cycle embracing a different sonic universe we see "In The Garden..." covering a sonic ark spanning from droning improvised DarkJazz to spiritual Jazz x Spoken Word fusion cuts evoking faint memories of genre icons like Lydia Lunch or the way lesser known Irene Lavina, various collage techniques, flickering FreeJazz x Improv sequences, even classic late night Jazz episodes, church service resembling choir pieces and, on the other hand, tonally off-kilter layerings which, in this overall combination, make this album one for those well versed within the world of Avantgarde-leaning music.

Shimakaze - Dance [Ghostfloppy Recordings 005]

Put out on the circuit on June 20th, 2k23 via the Floppy Disk-focused label that is Ghostfloppy Recordings is Shimakaze's "Dance", a one track single affair which takes on peaktime HardDance x HardTrance from a LoBit-leaning angle, providing an astoundingly heavy punch and brooding bassline action paired with mysterious processed vocal samples and uplifting synth melodies for the HandsUp ravers out there. Slightly nostalgic, yet proper good.

Sol 1 - Der Rächer EP [Fresscode Records 014 Promo]

Put out on the circuit via Fresscode Records as their cat.no. 014 on June 6th, 2k23 is the "Der Rächer EP", the latest digital three track single cooked up by Sol 1. Opening with the title track the project provides a deep and pumping take on classic Techno with its intricately programmed hi-hat figures and ever shifting, hypnotic 'troity synth minimalisms garnished with classic, micro-cut House vocals snippets, subsequently followed by the uptempo Techno madness and eardrum penetrating sinewave beeps of "Access 666" which, due to its distinct rolling drum sounds, evokes faint memories of a well known early Trance classic whilst the closing cut that is "Hard Sync" caters a muscular, slightly Bigroom-oriented TechTrance vibe with its combination of metallic, Acid-infused laser synths and reverberating vocoder samples. Proper good, this.

Parchman Prison Prayer - Some Mississippi Sunday Morning [Glitterbeat 143]

Now this is something completely different and something even the most avid and dedicated music fan (... or nerd) would never have imagined to come across. Seriously, who'd ever expect to experience audio recordings of a sunday morning service coming to light that was held in a US maximum security state penitentiary? This is what the Parchman Farm prison in Mississippi is which, after three years of negotiation, granted producer Ian Brennan a few hours of access to the facility to record a total of twelve individual solo performances laid down by inmates as well as three choir pieces throughout the facilities sunday service hours. The result is an a little more than 37 minutes spanning journey through raw, deeply spiritual gospel music, surprisingly soulful and beauteous piano ballads like the touching "I Give Myself Away, So You Can Use Me", oldtime melodies and eerie subsonic baritone repetitions in the highly fascinating "Solve My Need" which, to our surprise, is as unprocessed and non-overdubbed like the rest of this album, including the subsequent, surprisingly modern minimal Future R'n'B rhythms of "Falling In Love With Jesus Was The Best Thing I've Ever Done", improvised Spoken Word freestyles and a grand finale which matches the joy and enthusiasm of every regular church service. Most likely an album unlike any other Spiritual album you'll probably ever hear. For a reason.

4ZZZ1 - Hirnentsafter EP [Psychocandies 104 Promo]

Released on the digital circuit via the long-standing imprint that is Psychocandies as their cat.no. 104 on May 11th, 2k23 is 4ZZZ1's "Hirnentsafter EP". Opening with "Hirnfluid" we see 4ZZZ1 on a gooey, ever spiralling and almost Trance-inducing Acid tip garnished with oldskool'ish chitown percussion lines whereas "Hirnschrauber", the second cut on this single", caters more of a mental, trippy and spaced out minimalist Acid vibe atop of hypnotic Broken Techno beats somewhat reminiscent of E.O.X'. seminal "Acid New York E.P." which still is one of our favorite Acid releases ever. This is a trip.

Flocks - s/t [Zehra 010]

Released via the Berlin-based Zehra label on August 25th, 2k23 is "Flocks", the self-titled album debut by the duo of the same name which is comprised of Uli Hohmann and Werner Durand. Over the course of three pieces and a tital playtime of approx. 43 minute the duo explores the sonic possibilities of a variety of self-built and self-invented instruments alongside electronics and conventional instruments of both the Western and World Music realm to create a droning, immersive and highly captivating soundscape somewhat reminiscent of groups like the seminal Moritz Von Oswald Trio or Ambient- / ChillOut-leaning releases by Zombie Zombie, bringing forth fever'ish Tribal rhythms alongside glistening intense atmospheres and a general feel of extreme alertness paired with longing, EthioJazz-infused Jazz sequences, deeply nocturnal (Ethno)Ambient x DarkJazz fusion cuts as well as distinct Downtempo vibes in the concluding track named "The Hunter" which brings closure to a well hypnotic debut that's highly recommended for late night listening session. JP Inc. - Massage & Spa [Rope Worm 002]

Scheduled to be put out on the circuit - again - via the relatively fresh Warsaw-based Rope Worm label on October 6th, 2k23 is "Massage & Spa", the 10 tracks and roughly 58 minutes spanning album debut by John-Peter Hasson's JP Inc. project. Originally released as a digital bandcamp-only affair the limited to 300 copies CD edition lives up to the promise of catering '...the soundtrack to millions of massages worldwide...' as stated on the back of the album, catering an amalgamation of soft singular piano tone repetitions, tweeting and chirping birds and hovering, airy, pad-heavy atmospheres, all falling together in a pillowing, partly kitsch-y manner to create an overcomforting, hyperfriendly Ambient tapestry sitting right in between classic New Age muzak and EsoAmbient, in parts layered upon an earth-shaking, yet all embracing low end foundation especially prevalent in pieces like "Wet Pebbles In A Bowl" whereas "Warmed Towels" provides a time-dissolving and offensively un-offensive ever spiralling score for unending heavenly pleasures. Furthermore "Hair & Scalp" seems to be the sonic equivalent of elves frolicking across lush green pastures in ultra slow motion, "Privacy" even touches base with ultraminimalist glacial Dark Ambient, the "Sterilized Headrest" exemplifies Space Ambient greatness for 2k23 and "Shoulders" turns out to be as calm and heavenly as Ambient can ever get, presenting rising harmonies alongside a soothing backdrop of pouring rain just to name a few. Excellent stuff, this.

Meredith Bates - Tesseract [Phonometrograph]

Released via the Vancouver-based label that is Phonometrograph on June 2nd, 2k23 is Meredith Bates' "Tesseract", a monolithic, roughly 128 minutes spanning 2CD set of an album which sees the composer x violin player embark on a six track x composition journey with the longest of her most recent pieces covering a total playtime of whopping 46 minutes - for one single track! This being said Bates' opens from an angle of claustrophobic, Rhythm Industrial-infused Noize sequences before providing relief via hopeful Ambient / New Age passages of glistening, almost cinematic qualities whilst furthermore drifting into most beauteous, cascading and yet elegic (Neo)Classical composition techniques and finally touching base with cold and futuristic, sci-fi-leaning Industrial Electronics which in parts evoke memories of both Muslimgauze on the former Audio.NL label as well as Marco Passarani's underrated "Unspeakable Future Outbreaks" album and many other great releases of the time before dissolving into a melange of krautsy off-loops, experimental rhythms and vantablack low end movements. Subsequently the second part offers a menu of brittle, ever moving OffAmbient paired with nervous, ever decaying violin parts and enchanted Ambient movements garnished with subtle and subdued Future Tribal rhythms for the opening title track whereas the rest of the disc brings forth mysteriously scraping and crackling minimalist Electronica arrangements as well as more Classical melancholia and, in stark contrast, heavy mechanical Industrial x Rhythmic Noize arrangements as well. Quite a trip, this, although going through an extended album like this is quite in one sitting is quite a lot to take in and defo not meant for the unexperienced listener.

75 Dollar Bill - Power Failures [Karlrecords 108 Promo]

Released via the ever active Karlrecords label as their cat.no. 108 on August 25th, 2k23 is "Power Failures", the latest album outing by the prolific duo known as 75 Dollar Bill - originally intended and put out on the circuit as intermediate Bandcamp only release digitally but now available as an official 2LP vinyl set. Catering a menu of seven, oftentimes well extended pieces over the course of 78 minutes the core duo, plus a bunch of contributing artists and guest musicians, goes on an deep dive into what could be described as an amalgamation of droning PostRock, Desert Blues and ever meandering Krautrock structures from the very opening bars of "Power Failure #2" onwards whilst later progressing into twangy, slightly off-kilter and loop-based OffCountry meets AfroFunk instrumentals, deep tribal-infused DesertKraut episodes for dreamstate sunsets, esoteric, hovering flute meditations with a slightly ritualistic angle pointing towards Southern Asia vibewise and even fever'ish oriental melancholia in cuts like "∞WZN / Montreiul / Gcona / In The..." to just provide a rough layout of what you might be getting yourself into with this album which is a deep one for sure.

Evade & Sascha Müller - Jam Session [Ghostfloppy Recordings 004]

Put out on the circuit via the floppy disk-focused label Ghostfloppy Recordings on May 15th, 2k23 is "Jam Session", a new, limited to 50 copies collaborational effort cooked up by Evade and Sascha Müller - both well familiar names to regular readers of these pages. Whilst "Jam 1" sees the two producers on a captivating, ever floating LoBit x AcidTrance tip for mesmerized late night crowds the subsequent "Jam 2" takes on basically the same gooey Acid motif and transfers it into a deep and deeply washed out Armchair Techno realm which could've found his home on labels like XXC3 in the second half of the 90s for a reason. Lovely.

Peter Söderberg - String Dialogues [Thanatosis Produktion 025]

Put out on the circuit by the highly valued Swedish imprint Thanatosis Produktion on May 26th, 2k23 is "String Dialogues", the latest conceptual album work conceived and thought up by long standing composer x sound researcher Peter Söderberg who presents a set of six duo performances on this one, playing alongside renowned artists like Vilhelm Bromander, Stina Hellberg Agback, Mats Persson and others. Focusing on his specific ideas and theories on instrumental tuning, especially of the uncommon / unconventional kind, the 64 minutes spanning album opens from an almost folksy, yet tonally off-kilter angle despite providing the attempt to follow through on harmonic conventions whereas "Symbiosis" for harp and theorbo drifts off into a minimalist dreamstate, an intimate late night conversation between two instruments. Furthermore "Continuum" gives off a twisted, contemplative, yet somewhat comforting and OffJazz -x Dark Jazz-informed vibe and the concluding cut that is "Sustain" brings forth mythical, almost archaic drones alongside eerie, fever'ish tones and therefore introduces a new vibe and angle to the sound of Söderberg's "String Dialogues". Deep Listening Music for those who know.

Ard Bit - Field Recordings 04: Balkans [self-released]

Coming in straight from the Netherlands only recently is "Field Recordings 04: Balkans", the latest, July 5th, 2k23 released album by Ard Bit, a continuous project run by Dutch artist Ard Janssen. Over the course of seven tracks and 21 minutes Janssen amalgamates a plethora of oftentimes washed out, cut up or otherwise unidentifiable fragments of Field Recordings with experimental electro-acoustic treatments and x or classic Ambient structures, resulting in a fascinating set of Deep Listening Music surely influenced by Musique Concrete and probably early tape experiments featuring highlights such as "Vervloekte Bergen" with its somewhat unsettling nocturnal ambience evoking memories of nights out spent alone in deep dark forests, the unscathed Field Recordings of "Barbed Wire" layered atop of classic Scanner-reminiscing Ambient x IDM movements and scraping mechanical quasi-rhythms as well as the chiming, meditative peaceful rural naturalism of "Krave" just to pick out three favorites here. Recommended.

Sascha Müller - Exodus EP [Dancefloor Socialism 019 Promo]

Put out on the digital circuit via Dancefloor Socialism on May 30th, 2k23 is the "Exodus EP" cooked up by Uelsen's finest Sascha Müller. Opening with the original version "Exodus" Mr. Müller caters an ever rolling, Acid-infused TechTrance affair with Underworld-like synth sequences for heaving peaktime floors whereas the subsequent "Exodus *DJ Nightnoise Mix" presents a brooding sci-fi leaning angle with slow, reverberating bassdrums, mystical atmospheres and an extensive addition of trippy vocoder vocals which give way to angelic risers for a change of sonic focus. Proper.

Hilde Marie Holsen - Ediacara [Pelun 001]

Released via the freshly launched Pelun label as their cat.no. 001 on August 18th, 2k23 is "Ediacara", the latest album by Norwegian trumpet player Hilde Marie Holsen. Over the course of three extended pieces and a total playtime of 34+ minutes Hilde Marie Holsen once again follows her ventures into highly experimental and avantgarde trumpet improvisations, enhanced by in situ electronic processing and intervention, taking inspiration - and track names - from three subsequent epochs in the planets development multiple hundred million years ago. Opening with the albums title track Holsen caters a longing and deeply melancholia-infused journey into Ambient Jazz x Future Jazz territories accompanied by sparse atmospheric crackles and surface noise resembling textures as well as slowly swelling Dark Ambient dronage and a surprisingly uplifting climax subsequently followed by the scenic, large scale panoramic angle of "Kambrium" which follows a slightly similar compositional approach at first, yet drifts off into the eerie outerdimensional realms of (Neo)Cosmic, with its high frequency sound cascades cutting through the dark like laser beams. Furthermore "Ordovicium" reflects a, despite still experimental, traditional take on trumpet performance with longing, romantic Ambient Jazz melodies freely meandering in the back end of the tunes overall mixdown, slightly subdued by ever present Ambient haze and a maelstrom of nervously grinding, rasping quasi-percussive - or better: quasi-rhythmic - textures and, finally, an intense crescendo of noisy layers before closing on a calming and peaceful note. Nice one.

Chloe Lum & Yannick Desranleau - The Garden Of A Former House Turned Museum [No Hay Discos 003]

Put out on the circuit as the third release of the Canadian No Hay Discos label on August 11th, 2k23 is "The Garden Of A Former House Turned Museum", the latest artistic cooperation laid down by Chloe Lum & Yannick Desranleau. With their shared history of creation reaching back almost two decades their latest, only 27 minutes spanning longplayer is split into seven distinct pieces referred to as 'letters' written (or imagined?) by an anonymous source addressing Brazilian author Clarice Lispector, with singer Sarah Albu providing a fascinating vocal performance in between theatrical x drama singing, Spoken Word, Avantgarde Folk and - for some reason or the other - Björk'esque Leftfield Pop eccentricity atop of an intense, highly dramatic, demanding and sometimes even dissonant foundation of traditional Jazz elements with a Broadway attitude and thundering Avantgarde Jazz which, in this form, makes "The Garden Of A Former House Turned Museum" one of the most unique and probably most remarkable conceptual Jazz releases out there these days.

Intredasting.

Annea Lockwood - Glass World [Room40 Promo]

Set for re-release via Australia's Room40 label as a CD edition accompanied by an extended interview book on September 8th, 2k23 is "Glass World", the remastered version of Annea Lockwood's 1970 debut of the same name. A slightly short of 45 minutes set of miniatures, 23 in total, which reflect on the sonic curiosity of the long standing artist and her approach of deep and careful listening with a set of highly intimate, close up recordings of chiming glass, wobbling metal plates and other manipulated objects, seemingly oftentimes unprocessed, yet sometimes recorded and undergoing electronic x electroacoustic treatments to an extent the technology of the time - half a century ago! - allowed for, resulting in sweeping wobbles, clanging, tongue-in-cheek improvisations of a minimalist nature, enhanced wall shaking low ends and other, sometimes surprising effects which, despite seeming rather primitive in comparison to todays standards of electronic processing and endless DAWssibilities, still provide a fascinating and focused take on isolated sound as well as an important piece of experimental music history, especially for dedicated fans of Musique Concrete. Go check.

Zark - 5 [Zarkon Records 005 Promo]

Released via the artist-run Zarkon Records label on May 4th, 2k23 is "5", the fifth consecutive digital two-track single by Zark. Following a simple, but effective naming scheme "5.1." opens on a playful, curious, positive and somewhat trance-inducing MinimalTechno tip before introducing a lovely midrange sawtooth synth motif, housey claps and dreamy piano chords for the late night crowd whereas the follow up "5.2" caters a similar, yet more lively, bouncy and genuinely happy approach to MinimalTechno rounded off with atmospheric background pads and a mid-noughties attitude. Lovely.

Tom Schneider - Isotopes [Macro 072]

Put out on the circuit via Stefan Goldmann's Macro imprint on June 23rd, 2k23 is "Isotopes", the longplay solo debut by Tom Schneider who basically relies on a stripped down set-up of piano, sampler and granular synthesizer for the creation of his twelve tracks spanning firstling. With this album Schneider, also keyboard player of the Macro-released outfit KUF, presents an overall menu of basically Modern Classical x Contemporary Classical solo piano cuts, both improvised as well as composed, mostly tender of nature, yet incorporating dramatic or fast paced sequences at times and sporting relatively sparse electronic interventions which are, for the most part, restricted to short, yet rapid pitch and x or filter sweeps as well as short off-kilter tonal wobbles most prevalent in pieces like "Serpentines" whereas the title track "Isotopes" evokes memories of very early electronic tape composition techniques, "Absence" ultimately focuses on mechanical minimalisms and the absence of harmonic tonality before "Particular Interest" is based on a few particular sound fragments only accompanied by near silence to provide a brief overview on what to expect on this avantgardistic debut.

Recorded live in concert in Banyoles, Catalonia on April 28th, 2k22 on behalf of Catalan journalist Ignacio Julia at the premier of his book on The Velvet Underground the album opens with the seminal "All Tomorrow's Parties" which starts the journey on a beautiful instrumental piano ballad tip whereas "What Goes On" introduces a brooding, vibrant low end and captivating dynamic drama as well as well psychedelic guitar solos, "Lou's Blues" brings forth deep and rumbling late night summer evening DesertBlues vibes in style and "Femme Fatale" rounds things off in a chiming, tender and playfully caressing manner just to name a few. One well done tribute speaking to an intersecting set of Psychedelic Rock fans in general as well as to devoted followers of all things Lou Reed / The Velvet Underground.

01. Fila Brazillia - Mermaids [Running Back Double Copy 009]
Gerd Janson's Running Back label has accomplished another great job with unearthing classic tunes for the Running Back Double Copy subseries, actually going back to the year 1991 in which the duo named Fila Brazillia released their very first single courtesy of their very own Pork Recordings label. And still, more than 30 years thereafter, "Mermaids" and the also featured "Mermaids *Demo Version" still hold up as prime examples of beautifully floating UK Intelligent Techno of the time, bringing forth intricately layered synth pads, seductive melodies and heavenly non-vocalisms for early morning sunrise sets dabbling in what could be dubbed as ProtoTrance x Balearic House today. On the flip a previously unreleased version of the 1994 tune "Slacker" which, after an extended intro sequence, sees the duo on a hypnotic and club functional Intelligent Techno tip, providing stripped down, slowly building loop repetition as a foundation for tender meandering cosmic synths and cascading bursts of melodic goodness.

Another more recent release on the ever active, yet mysterious User Recordings label is the "Stuff EP", a digital two track single cooked up by User 14512377464. Released on May 9th, 2k23 the opening cut "Untitled 10-1" brings forth galopping, hard hitting Acid madness accompanied by rasping, super distorted clap sequences whilst the subsequent "Untitled 11-1" caters more of a elastic, fast paced, feathering, yet super psychedelicc Acid trip through the outerdimensional realms of our universe and therefore turns out to be our favorite cut on this one.
