Sakina Abdou - Goodbye Ground [Relative Pitch Records]
Released via Relative Pitch Records on December 22nd, 2k22 is "Goodbye Ground", the latest full on solo album by French saxophone player Sakina Abdou who caters the pieces "The Day I Became A Floor", "Goodbye Ground" as well as the five part composition "Planting Chairs (Part 1-5)" over the course of roughly 43 minutes playtime on this one. Solely recorded on alto and teno saxophone Sakina Abdou caters a menu of jazzed out, yet well accessible solo improvisations as a flawless showcase of her musical sensitivity, be it through the corresponding tonal shifts and somewhat cheeky harmonic exercises in the opening piece or the intense, gnarly and somewhat unnerving FreeJazz of the nearly 12 minutes spanning title track. Furthermore especially "Planting Chairs Pt. 3" reveals a slighly more playful and somewhat tender side of Abdou's sonic spectrum whereas "Planting Chairs Pt. 5" digs deep into nocturnal and yearning Jazz experimentalisms for a closing just to name a few. One to grab the attention of dedicated Jazz purists for sure.
