Zea - Witst Noch Dat D'r Neat Wie [Makkum Records 033 / Subroutine Records 119]

Put out on the circuit as a collaborational effort between the labels Makkum Records and Subroutine Records on November 19th, 2k21 is "Witst Noch Dat D'r Neat Wie", the latest album by Arnold De Boer's solo project Zea - and, now that's a special, his second album fully focusing on the Frisian language and therefore paying homage to his own provenance as well as his close connection to and love for linguistics. Released as a fifteen track album spanning 56 minutes runtime and providing an extended hardcover booklet with liner notes alongside beautiful illustrations as well as lyrics not only in Frisian but additional translations into other languages "Witst Noch Dat D'r Neat Wie" brings forth a touching, yet widely unrecognized tradition of local Folk music and songwriting with the sparse opening song even touching base with what could be described as Frisian Blues of sorts, building up towards almost Rock-infused expressions, "De Doer" pairs subdued, meandering guitar pluckings with an intense Spoken Word performance, pieces like "Boarne" or the calming sonic stream of "Ik Gean Nea Dea" are focusing on a classic, masterful approach towards what is widely recognized as Singer/Songwriter stylewise whilst "Fuort" - our favorite cut on the album alongside the stripped down "Roeiers" - even digs deep into Desert Blues / Americana alongside whispered vocals before providing a surprising, highly dramatic dynamic change for all the Punk loving Frisians out there whereas the plucked rhythmic guitars in "Doch Noch" even seem to reference African Kologo music for a change just to name a few. A well excellent album. Recommended.

Malo Moray & His Inflatable Knee - Improvisations From The Solar System (And Other Solo Pieces) [Possibly Sam]

Coming in from Leipzig / Germany as a limited one-sided 50 minutes cassette tape release is "Improvisations From The Solar System (And Other Solo Pieces)", the new album by Malo Moray & His Inflatable Knee. Released on November 26th, 2k21 and - we've said it before - like many other albums influenced by the ongoing Covid-19 situation the album pairs Malo Moray's personal experiences throughout the crisis with his fascination for space and the cosmos, building a sonic universe created from a plethora of lo-fi and x or self-built devices around, albeit processed, upright bass improvisations, meandering in between Ambient and Deep Listening Music, adding slightly washed out strands of Contemporary Classical music to the mix whilst, in other sequences, krautsy low end pulses emerge from the deep, accompanied by modular bleeps and blips whilst certain cuts are even travelling deep into the frosty realms of minimalist ColdAmbient, providing a coherent, spaced out, yet widely varied listening experience for those on the lookout for an album that truly manages to take the listener on a well tender and cafrefully arranged journey. This is a trip.

Vitor Joaquim - Quietude [self-released]

And here we go with another self-released album that's been hitting the electronic music circuit these days. Put out on October 15th, 2k21 via Portuguese composer Vitor Joaquim is "Quietude", a seven tracks and roughly 44 minutes spanning album piece originally initiated and commissioned for a musical live performance which, like many other things throughout what seem to be the past two years, never came to full on fruition due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation. Now available digitally as well as full CD we see Vitor Joaquim surely live up to the promises the album title is making, delivering a calm and quiet, stripped down and spatial album piece comprised of chiming, minimalist melodic sequences of timeless, ethereal quality - floating beyond time and space on their own or being accompanied by brooding, unsettling low frequency drones and bass pulses creeping up from eerie subsurface vaults and hollows in pieces like "A Casa" which also introduces sustained, longing trumpet melancholia for DarkJazz connaisseurs to the musical mix whereas partially layered Field Recordings of various origins are prevalent in cuts like "A Vessada" or the hypernaturalist "A Eira" whilst "O Pombal" harks back to a swell of brooding, vantablack nocturnal Drone minimalism for the headstrong just to name a few. File under: Deep Listening Music for cold winter nights. Headphone consumption and total isolation recommended.

Olivia Block - Innocent Passage In The Territorial Sea [Room40 Promo]

Another freshly released album outing coming in from Australia's ever active Room40 imprint is "Innocent Passage In The Territorial Sea", the latest longplay effort by Chicago-based sound artist and composer Olivia Block and the latest addition to her 20+ years spanning catalogue. With a total of six tracks spanning a little more than 35 minutes runtime we see Olivia Block building a deeply woven sonic structure based on a foundation of seven bass notes, reappearing in various iterations of the same pattern over the course of the entire piece, pairing comforting, all embracing organic low frequency movements with crisp and ethereal pads of oftentimes Synth- or (Neo)Cosmic-leaning nature in the opener "Axiolite" whereas "Laika" reveals an icey and brittle, yet even shocking and probably deadly off-kilter approach which evokes memories of soul-eating entities crossing over into our world from another multi-dimensional realm of existence. With "Great Northern, 34428" Olivia Block returns to calmer lands with an amalgamation of panoramic synth pads and a steady, yet slightly irregular rhythm signature reminiscent of an old automobile motor mixed far into the back ground of the tune, "En Echelon" combines an overwhelming, ever pulsating bass drone with more off'ish, washed out, maritime and vintage sounding Mellotron improvisations whereas "Through Houses" employs more of a classic, well relaxing Ambient vibe before "Rivers In Reverse" waves goodbye on a festive, somewhat chiming and surely charming tip, weighing in a bit of a sweet vintage lo-fi attitude for a closing.

Dullmea & Ricardo Pinto - Orduak [self-released]

A self released artist album. A thing one doesn't come across too often these days, at least not on the physical circuit as many artists follow the part of convenience, uploading tune after tune to platforms like Soundcloud until a - oftentimes digital - label signs them and more or less helps out in terms of a digital infrastructure and exposure. This said, there are exceptions and one is to be found in "Orduak", the eight tracks and roughly 30 minutes spanning album by Dullmea and Ricardo Pinto which is about to be released independently on November 25th, 2k21. Starting from scratch inspired by a Portuguese sentence more or less randomly chosen for its sonic beauty and harmony the two collaborating artists embark on a stripped down, minimalistic Ambient journey built from both tender electronic textures and ethereal, layered non-vocalisms for the most part with pieces like the dark, Clicks'n'Cuts-infused "Please Mind The Gap" and its brooding, hollow and vault-like atmosphere providing an exception from the overall musical norm on this one which soon finds redemption in the subsequent "Nem Fogo, Nem Vento, Nem Sopro" and its heavenly, ecclesiastical choir layers and overall festive vibe which is also matched in cuts like "Archaea" just to name a few. Defo a nice addition for Ambient collectors out there even though it seems many tunes end way too abprubtly and after too short a runtime to really unfold and provide the calm and relaxing vibe they set out to provide.

Tunnels Of Ah - Iron Speaks [Hypershape Records 013]

Released via Hypershape Records as a beautiful limited metal box CD edition on October 22nd, 2k21 is "Iron Speaks" - the formerly abandoned and now reworked fifth studio album of Stephen Ah Burroughs' musical project Tunnels Of Ah which is now officially regarded the outfits sixth full length longplay piece, standing a total of six tracks and 49 minutes runtime strong. Drawing inspiration from the tales told about the origin of iron shared in the holy koran "Iron Speaks" embarks on a journey into a realm of haunted and surely vantablack Dark Ambient, filled to the brim with threatening, claustrophobic tension felt from the very first seconds of the unsettling, ever moving opener "Wardens" which builds up to a maelstrom of screamingly cold and scraping Noize which is followed by humumgous low end movements accompanied by screeching, yet subdued loops caused by metals bent under stress in "Iron Law" whereas "Every Hour Wounds" fully indulges in hollow, soul-eating DeathAmbient resembling indifferent thunder blown over from afar, crossing desolate wastelands and dystopian plains stretching out over miles and miles. Furthermore "Seize Arhats" provides a deeper, slightly droning amalgamation of Cold- and DeathAmbient textures characterized by dynamic changes and a stark contrast between organic sine pulses and icey midrange movements whereas "Abattoir Sutra" pairs comforting nightly subs with stinging, poisonous atmospheric swaths and otherworldly hisses before the final and aptly named cut "Terminus Est" caters a brittle, yet carefully arranged array of long, layered loops as well as stretched and subdued, klaxon'esques drone sequences for a closing. A meditation on eternal darkness that's not meant for the weak and depressive spirits out there.

Gintas K - Nervus Vagus [GK Rec. #05]

Coming in all the way from Lithuania recently is "Nervus Vagus", the latest and October 31st, 2k21 released album outing by Gintas Kraptavicius, better known as Gintas K to many fans and followers of experimental electronic and electro-acooustic music. Put out as cat.no. #05 of his very own label GK Rec. the album explores the depth and possibilities of granular synthesis in combination with, and this is a first, Spoken Word narratives which explore the world from a variety of angles and standpoints in terms of age, gender and topics according to the accompanying press sheet even though the vocal contributions are oftentimes fragmented and buried deep within the ever changing flow of bleeps, singular, yet digitally clean clangs and sterile atmospheres - plus: maybe most importantly, the language in use is probably Lithuanian and therefore incomprehensible to us in terms of content. This said, pieces like "Keep Walking" or "Pastys Story" provide a beautifully brittle, almost glassy and subaquatic take on Ambient minimalism defying any boundaries of our space-time-continuum as a singular entity, a closed sonic cosmos beyond our planes of existence whilst "Saule Fairy Tale About Dogs, Piglets & A Wolf" reveals a bubbling, chromatic array of cascading, highly detailed micro-glitches, "Maryte Story" weighs in a brooding, dystopian sci-fi Dark Ambient feel alongside minimalistic, scraping sound textures whereas the nearly 14 minutes spanning bonus cut "+ All We Are" reveals a fascinating array of computational sounds blips just to name a few. Great stuff for lovers of advanced avantgarde music. Check.

Savage Republic - Meteora [Gusstaff Records]

Coming in from the Poland-based label Gusstaff Records only recently and released on November 19th, 2k21 is "Meteora" - the latest album outing created by L.A.'s prolific underground outfit Savage Republic and their first longplay effort since the 2014-released "Aegean". Now re-appearing with a total of nine brand new tracks rolled out over a total playtime of 39 minutes we see Savage Republic staying true to their primal, muscular and surely storming take on Industrial-infused PostPunk x (No)Wave from the very first seconds of this album onwards, taking over with an overwhelming melange of militant drums and washed out, feedback heavy guitars as well as intense, oftentimes political lyricism especially prevalent in the heavy, doom-leaning "Gods & Guns" whereas "Bizerte Rolls" adds elements of hounded, well Tarantino'esque Desert Rock / Americana to the mix, "Unprecedented" weighs in whispered Spoken Words and longing screams over a truly wall-of-sound resembling maelstrom of an instrumental track and "Newport '86" even comes forth with a strikingly melodic, somewhat anthemic Alternative bop quality that one wouldn't necessarily expect from a band like Savage Republic in the first place just to name a few. A heavyweight release, this. Check.

Robin Fox - Threnody To Now [Room40 Promo]

Another fresh one to be released via Room40 on December 3rd, 2k21 is "Threnody To Now", the new, roughly 34 minutes spanning album effort by Robin Fox which will be put out on the circuit as a limited cassette tape. Split into two parts, subsequently named "Threnody For Now I" and "Threnody For Now II", Fox presents two extended takes / patches of eurorack based modular recording magic of striking intensity on this one, brooding and ominous from the get go, evolving into shrieking, ear-piercing high frequency modulations and swampy, yet unsettling if not even threatening low frequency pulses which - even though partly of droning nature - could be well described as less threnodial yet rather emulating the sound, feel and angst brought on by the sirens of doom before the final apocalyptic air raid hits humanity, bringing forth a total wipe out, full on annihilation and an unseen level of over-extinction. Doomsday shall come and this is its soundtrack. Lovely.

Ingar Zach / Michele Rabbia - Musique Pour Deux Corps [Sofa Music]

Released via Norway's ever active experimental music staple Sofa Music on November 12th, 2k21 is "Musique Pour Deux Corps", the new collaborational album effort created in between Ingar Zach and Michele Rabbia - and their second conjunctional work in total. Born out of curiosity and an idea of there being a world of what is referred to as 'new percussion music' in the accompanying promo sheet, "Musique Pour Deux Corps" is presenting a sparse yet spatial array of highly complex, yet in a way also archaic and fever'ish, ever evolving rhythm signatures paired with vantablack electronic atmospheres and a cold, almost alienating tension, a feel of imminent danger as well as total urgency which results in a fascinating take on dystopian, monolithic Post-Industrial, only interrupted by tender Ambient pieces like "Cellule Lyrique" which provide a shimmering, diffuse reflection of light whilst the timeless DarkAmbient movements of "Joy" cater a feel of deep space stasis and a distant future unimaginably far away whereas "Mutation II" even deals with longing minimalisms and an innate feel of millenia spanning grief and isolation paired with highly digital Electronica vibes just to name a few. Defo one that has a lot to offer for multiple focused listening sessions. Check.

Jerman / Barnes - Hiss Lift [Room40 Promo]

Scheduled for release via Australia's ever active staple that is the Room40-imprint on December 3rd, 2k21 is "Hiss Lift", the latest two track album crafted by the collaborating artists Jeph Jerman and Tim Barnes for the label. Opening with "40 Pictures Of Frozen Lakes" followed by the subsequent second piece named "A Lovely Little Pain" the roughly 37 minutes spanning album deals with and reflects upon the time the two artists spent touring together and even takes its title from a sign they discovered at an elevator in a hotel not mentioned whilst on being on tour. And as colourful and multilayered, sometimes even random, semi-chaotic and half-structured life - and recording... - on tour might be the album manages to reflect it well with an ever continuous stream of sonic events, layers and layers of - partly processed - Field Recordings and electronic textures reminiscent of endless hours spent in night trains or hotel / airport lobbies, nawing sine waves and screeching movements, mumbled, muffled voices getting lost in the mix, moments of silence, cut up collage sequences, an emerging maelstrom of thundering Industrial HarshNoize, live snippets and announcements captured throughout their journey, dives deep into nightly electrostatic atmospheres paired with abstract, clanging metallic rhythm signatures and presents a well thrilling, always captivating journey into a realm most likely to be enjoyed by those appreciating early Ambient-leaning works by Scanner and other pieces dealing with sonic interpretations of the modern world that could be seen in the context of contemporary Musique Concrete. Recommended.

SineRider - A Familiar Light [Sound In Silence 084]

Another fresh album release put on the circuit via the Athens-based imprint Sound In Silence on October 11th, 2k21 is "A Familiar Light", the latest full length outing by American producer Devin Powers a.k.a. SineRider. With his second, eleven tracks and roughly 42 minutes spanning album for the label he follows and caters to the imprints original core sound with a floating and ever so softly modulating take on cascading crystalline Ambient structures of a friendly, playful and frolicking nature as well as a characteristic timelessness, presenting warm, organic and comforting goodness in cuts like "Ashore", uplifting, almost SinoAmbient-resembling synth tones in pieces like "Hadean" whilst bringing forth cute, yet somewhat distinct and catchy melancholia-inducing melodic minimalisms in "Loran" - which might be our personal favorite on "A Familiar Light" for a reason - whereas "Mishima" triggers our deepest level of imagination with soft hypnotic repetitions which easily could last for a lifetime without ever getting old - just to name a few. The most tender and beautiful of Ambient albums, this. Get.

Jørgen Teller - Public Vibraphone [Clang 072 Promo]

Put on the the digital circuit on November 12th, 2k21 via the ever active imprint that is Clang is "Public Vibraphone", the latest album concept thought up by composer x artist x sound researcher Jørgen Teller. Derived from a set of stereo loops initially created for the 2k20 edition of The Sparkling Sound Festival which were later re-recorded and electronically treated Teller caters a menu of nine, overall roughly 48 minutes spanning, compositions on this one, leading from a brittle, yet ethereal and Ambient-leaning loop approach in the opening piece that is "Doororr" to stripped down, solemn polyrhythms of an inward looking, almost meditative nature, progressing further into retrofuturist, glassy and most beautiful SpaceAmbient textures in bits like "Shrüften", touching base with tectonic Dark Ambient shifts in "Immulatori" whilst providing plinkering, almost festive goodness alongside atmospheric crackles in "Lizterra" and bringing forth tense, crystalline sci-fi minimalism in "Swwiww" just to name a few. A well beautiful and intimate listening experience, this. Check.

Pamela Z - Echolocation [RVNG Intl. Promo]

Coming in via mail without much, or any, additional information provided on a press / promo sheet is "Echolocation" - seemingly a re-release of Pamela Z's original tape of the same from back in 1988 which has been put out on the circuit via RVNG Intl. once again on November 5th, 2k21. Within eight tracks and a total runtime of roughly 28 minutes Pamela Z - better known #irl as Pam Brooks to her friends and family - explores a sparse, raw variation of stripped down and hyperminimalist PostPunk / (No)Wave based on hypnotic unprocessed wood block / stick rhythms of well primordial nature paired with expressive, theatrical falsetto vocals in the remarkable opening piece "Echolocation" before employing both a classic, more electronically-based PostPunk approach, takes on Spoken Word tape collage techniques as well as further variations on raw falsetto vocals and even hyperexperimental SynthPop which preceeded Vaporwave by decades ("I Know") only to end up on a most Avantgarde Cut-Up vibe with the final piece "Scaff Scivi Gno" which perfectly showcases the close connection between PostPunk and the art scene back in 80s - a context in which this one very fits and therefore should be noted and checked by every genre aficionado for a reason. Check.

Panoptique Electrical - Decades (2001 - 2021) [Sound In Silence 085]

Coming in from the Greek Ambient staple that is the imprint known as Sound In Silence is the October 11th, 2k21 released compilation album "Decades (2001 - 2021)", an extensive collection of works, mostly short miniatures, crafted and carved out by South Australian producer Jason Sweeney under the name of Panoptique Eletcrical. Spanning a total of 31 pieces spread out over the course of roughly 70 minutes it's not made fully clear if these tracks are, at least partially, re-released from other albums or compilations, have sat unpublished for years or even stem from Sweeney's work for experimental film, gallery spaces and theatre - fields the ever active artist is also closely connected to -, yet the carefully picked selection gradually evolves from beautiful and well comforting Ambient pieces towards heavier, more Clicks'n'Cuts-leaning, off-kilter Ambient territories ("Never Sleep Again"), brittle, icey Deep Listening Music x Dark Ambient bits ("Three Ghosts Of Hill"), comforting melancholia alongside a steady swell of crackly surface noise to be found in "Slow Photographer", touching Piano excursions ("People Disappear" / "The Desire Of The Other"), tender and dubbed out heavenly pad goodness in "New York City Quiet Space" whilst pieces like "A Lost Love" gravitate towards shrieking, yearning Synth melancholia whereas Panoptique Electrical is even touching base with panoramic drone compositions in "The Night" just to name a few, providing an essential addition to each and every collection of classy high quality Ambient x Deep Listening Music. And it is limited to 200 hand-numbered copies as well. Get.

Kate Moore - Revolver [Unsounds]

Put out on the circuit via Unsounds on October 31st, 2k21 is "Revolver", the latest, and roughly 50 minutes spanning, album by composer Kate More who caters a collection of eight tracks originally commissioned for a dance installation by Ken Unsworth which are now subsumed as a coherent longplay piece for a Modern Classical / Contemporary Classical-leaning audience. Performed and recorded in Sydney, Australia by a five piece setting of artists combining the sounds of violin, cello, double bass, harp and percussion the album showcases a pure and otherworldy, ever floating crystalline beauty from the very first moments of the opening title track onwards, presenting an array of simplistic, yet carefully layered loop structures slowly progressing into complex polyrhythms, pairing tender, timeless and perfectly executed instrumental performance with cinematic string arrays well suitable for panning panorama plain and prairie shots, weighing in melancholia-inducing, emotionally touching (Neo)Classical minimalisms in pieces like "Trio (Song Of Ropes)" and its subsequent solo performance versions and providing loads of sublime instrumental mastery for intimate listening sessions - alone or intimately shared with a loved one. Recommended.

Insect Ark - Future Fossils [Consouling Sounds]

Released via the long standing imprint that is Consouling Sounds in mid-October of 2k21 is "Future Fossils", the latest album outing by Insect Ark - a now duo led by Dana Schechter who still worked with Portland-based drummer Ashley Spungin for this album, even though the latter seemingly has left the band project by the time this review is written. Weighing in three brand new cuts as well as an extended live improvisation session recorded in Brooklyn, New York on November 16th, 2k16 the opener for this roughly 43 minutes spanning album, "Oral Thrush, pairs brooding electronic textures and unsettling low end pulses with longing, stretched and slightly distorted guitar movements, providing a touching take on nocturnal Dark Ambient stylewise whereas the subsequent "Gypsum Blade" takes the genre further towards a most minimalist, yet tense and highly atmospheric level. Furthermore "Anopsian Volta" brings forth a tender, unexpected take on nightly, inward-looking piano improv melancholia which adds more of a Contemporary Classical / Modern Classical touch to the album before the 23+ minutes of "Gravitrons" showcase the captivating, spine-tingling sonic realm Insect Ark are exploring live - a realm of darkness and cinematic beauty alike, a fusion of Dark Ambient and brooding (Neo)Cosmic, garnished with Industrial-influences and a clear vision of post sci-fi dystopia. Excellent. Recommended.

Light Conductor - Sequence Two [Constellation Records Promo]

Put out on the circuit via Constellation Records on October 29th, 2k21 is "Sequence Two", the aptly named sophomore album outing carved out and conceived by Jace Lasek and Stephen Ramsey under their conjunctional artistic guise that is Light Conductor. Rolled out over a total of four tracks and roughly 45 minutes total playtime the two collaborating artists further flesh out their shared sonic vision which is as retrofuturistic as it is most modernist in structure and approach, combining large scale vintage synth arrangements and, despite the absence of what would be a proper dancefloor functional beat foundation, what was once called IDM / Intelligent Dance Music back in the early 90s, weighing in ever changing and meandering melodies as well as spaced out guitars and longing, anthemic vocals which only appear in the opening cut "Splitting Light" whereas the subsequent track "The Rooms Are Turning Inside Out" floats and hovers beyond space and time in a classic, most beautiful Ambient fashion. Furthermore "Pyramids In Slow Rotation" amalgamates tender, carefully layered pads and a reverberating two tone motif atop swampy, organic low end pulses of ever growing intensity, working its way all the way up to an almost kitsch-dripping Synth climax before the concluding piece "Life Under A Double Sun" harks back to a realm of (Neo)Cosmic x ProtoAmbient spheres perfectly resonating with the sonic worlds explored by the likes of Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream when electronic music was still in its infancy of sorts for a closing. Defo a worthwhile recommendation for all Ambient and ChillOut headz out there. Get.

Coming in via mail from Berlin these days is "Wollufos", the latest self-released album outing put on the circuit by formerly Hamburg-based band Hunger which are catering a total of ten tracks on this one, all pressed on recycled vinyl and therefore weighing in a slightly varying individual color scheme for each record - an approach as unique and individualistic as the musical direction the three piece project is taking on this album, one we admittedly haven't come across in many years. Defo reminiscent of many a band performing at Hamburg's former Astrastube when the venue was in its infancy still a good 20 years ago Hunger are fusing a certain instrumental lo-fi, probably artschool-infused approach with elements of playful, curious Indietronica, loop-based PostRock and Post-PostRock alongside additional electronic textures, a free floating, non-conformist and experimental diy-attitude as well as slightly abstract grooves, twangy, off-kilter guitars and other organic goodness which will most likely resonate with a fan base still well fond of early releases on labels like Morr Music, legendary, yet long time defunct labels like Dhyana Records as well as the music brought forward by acts like Harald 'Sack' Ziegler and Frank Schültge 'Blumm' whilst even throwing in occasional Jazz loops in cuts like "Karoshi Hop" or the subsequent "Sunset Sling". Quite intriguing, somewhat intimate and also a major personal throwback for us as we've seen quite a lot of similar music being performed live when Hamburg venues were still open and willing to take on more of a risk in terms of live bookings on weekdays. If Hunger are playing in your city do not even consider missing out on this.

What a flashback. And what a bang0r this tune still is after all these years. Without a doubt Shannon's 1983 hit single "Let The Music Play" is one of the major tunes that popularized the Latin Freestyle sound all over the globe and it has aged well with its heavy (Proto)Electro beats, raw synth stabs and captivating, highly dramatic vocal performance which are now available once again on heavyweight purple vinyl and a glorious embossed Mirage Records cover which should be considered to be an essential must have item for every DJs collection. If this marks the beginning of a Latin Freestyle revival I'm all here for it.
