Weltklang - Klaster [Exil-System 20-19]

The second album coming in these days from Thomas Voburka's long standing Weltklang project which released its very first single back in 1980 is "Klaster" - or, to be more precise, the limited to 100 vinyl copies silk-screen artwork version of "Klaster" put out on the circuit in 2k20 as this album has, as many other Weltklang releases, been released in various versions, an approach well suited to the diy-vibe employed by the label Exil-System ever since. Serving a menu of five cuts Voburka takes the classic Ingenious Dilettantes sound of the project to a darker, more brooding and Industrial-leaning level from the very first seconds of the epic, 11+ minutes spanning opener "Landstejn" onwards which fuses scenic, low end-heavy vintage monosynth melodies with sharp rhythm signatures and certain Dark Ambient elements - think labels like Treue Um Treue / Reue Um Reue here - whereas the subsequent "Trebon" drifts of into a realm of most beautiful Synth x Cosmic melancholia. Flipping the record we see "Dyje" bringing forth an extended, beatless, yet highly captivating take on melodic SynthWave x Minimalwave for advanced late night dancefloors whilst the title cut "Klaster" caters dreamy, well dramatic kraut-infused modulation layers working their way up to a climax of full-on tilt mode and the concluding cut named "Vranov" fuses slightly dubbed out Synth goodness with a decent, yet straightforward 4/4 foundation which probably would make a perfect closing track to play in a large scale festival setting to send punters their way home with an overload of overwhelming emotions. Great stuff. Recommended.

Kuunatic - Gate Of Klüna [Glitterbeat Records Promo]

Released via Glitterbeat Records on October 29th, 2k21 is "Gate Of Klüna" which is the first full length album outing by the Tokyo-based three piece band that is Kuunatic. Following up to only one previous EP as well as a split-7" single "Gate Of Klüna" comes at us as a fully fledged, eight tracks and roughly 44 minutes spanning longplayer which sees the band members, who've been inspired to sort of name themselves after the Finnish word for 'moon' which is 'kuu' and shape their imagined space sci-fi fantasy world around it, further explore a sonic universe built on a foundation of heavy, psychedelic guitars and primal drums present from the very start of the albums opener "Dewbow" which also brings forth influences of traditional Japanese melodies and what might be referred to in the Western world as - somewhat cliche - an overall Asian touch without drifting into esoteric World Music territories. Yet rather we see Kuunatic drawing inspiration from a wide range of styles, be it the obvious Oriental DesertRock meets dark PostPunk of "Desert Empress Part. 1" with its intense, multilayered and perfectly synchronized vocals and fever'ish, ritualistic vibe, the driving, positively experimental madness spread by the "Full Moon Spree", the deep, score'esque JRock of "Titian" which could easily function as an epic title theme for some flashy, highly complex anime series of sorts whilst "Raven's War" brings forth an extended, doomed and spine-tingling DesertRock intro before taking a turn towards folksy, yet still dark and dangerous story telling just to name a few. Kuunatic are on a kuunatic tip for sure. Fascinating.

Jerusalem In My Heart - Qalaq [Constellation Records 158]

Put on the circuit via Montreal-based label Constellation Records on October 8th, 2k21 is "Qalaq", the latest album by Radwan Gazi Moumneh's multi-media project Jerusalem In My Heart who, alongside several contributing artists like Lucrecia Dalt, Oiseau-Tempete or Tim Hecker amongst others, creates a 13 tracks and roughly 42 minutes spanning longplayer conceptually revolving around the Arabic word "Qalaq" - a certain kind of deep worry which is pretty present in the heart of the Lebanese-Canadian musician due to the political as well as civil developments and ongoings in one of his two motherlands. This being said, the main language of "Qalab" is Arabic, spoken and sung by Radwan Gazi Moumneh atop a foundation of buzuk - a lute-like long necked string instrument - which is then deconstructed and re-arranged by the projects collaborators with their contributions being added to and woven into the original recordings. The results of these process vary widely, ranging from the both ethereal and hyperviolent sequences presented in "Abyad Barraq" to fragile combinations of electro-acoustic minimalism and slighty reprocessed Spoken Word loops ("Sa'at"), brooding, primal and well intense PostRock x Industrial fusion pieces like "'Ana Lisan Wahad", sparse, inward-looking, yet defragmented and distorted guitar meanderings in "Qalaq 2" as well as icey Cold Ambient atmospheres paired with calm, deeply touching and emotional vocals provided by VIZ to be found in "Qalaq 6" just to name a few. An album both eclectic and spine-tingling at the same time, yet one that requires patience and time as it's not one that easily gives out every little detail even after multiple listening sessions. Recommended.

Weltklang - Rückwärts [Exil-System]

Coming in straight from Vienna these days is "Rückwärts", one of the most recent album releases by Thomas Voburka's long standing Weltklang project which, most obviously, was put on the circuit by his very own imprint Exil-System in various versions and iterations according to its, slightly confusing, Discogs release page. Sporting a total of eight brand new tracks on 45rpm vinyl we see Weltklang on a raw and untamed, slightly Industrial-leaning Minimal Wave tip once again, catering hefty, bleep-heavy and greyscale'ish dancefloor bang0rz for creatures of the darkest night with cuts like "Lockdown" whereas bits like "Tanz Den Thomas Bernhard" add muffled 4/4 Techno influences to the mix whilst providing a tongue-in-cheek homage to a well known DAF classic before "Tatraplan" comes at dancefloors with more distinct lo-fi vibes and raw unpolished hi-hat madness and off-kilter melodies for connaisseurs of what was once known as a movement named Ingenious Dilettantes. The flipside's opener "1-2-3-4" weighs in anthemic synth bleeps, mad filter sweeps and beautiful text-to-speech vocoder abuse for those in the know, "Dynamo" brings forth a more hypnotic, mechanical kind of late night groove, the title cut "Rückwärts" presents an even more anthemic vibe and therefore might be our favourite cut on this album whilst "Control" takes minimalism and twisted text-to-speech abuse to a new level under cold and flickering white neon lights - or brutal supersonic hyperstrobes. If you're on good terms with madness, this probably is a well suitable addition to your ever growing collection of underground records. Check.

Elizabeth S. - Gather Love [Klanggalerie]

Released only recently via the long standing Klanggalerie label is "Gather Love", the very first solo album effort carved out by Elizabeth S. despited being on the circuit and having contributed to the works of seminal groups like Eyeless In Gaza as well as solo efforts by Martyn Bates since the mid-80s. With this background and nearly 40 years of experience on the scene "Gather Love", which also sees Martyn Bates and Alan Trench making occasional contributions to Elizabeth S. musical vision, starts on a dark, brooding and well haunted PostPunk tip driven by distorted guitars and heavy feedbacks alongside highly expressive vocals on the aptly titled "Misborn" only to make a sudden turn towards more folksy territories in the semi-acoustic cut "Will Your Love" which surely is influenced by the artists works with and for Eyeless In Gaza over the past decades. These two cuts are followed by the calm, yet scenic, almost theatrical backdrop of "The Carer" which, in itself, presents a fully fledged sonic storyline of epic qualities whereas "The Carter Girl" weighs in floating, ethereal non-vocalisms alongside tender, meandering piano lines and the primal drum patterns, haunted atmosphere and spine-tingling vocal performance brought forward in "The Hill" evoke memories of medieval witchcraft and dark spiritualism. Furthermore pieces like "Wanderlove" annunciate danger and darkness to come with their intense klaxon'esque drones and incisive vocal presence whilst the title song "Gather Love" caters touching minimalism and "No Rain" even brings forth sparse, yet razor sharp beats for late night Industrial dancefloors just to name a few. One for cold and dark winter nights, this.

Soothing sounds. Floating Pads. An ever meandering stream of sound and harmony, slowly changing and ever evolving. A comforting Ambient pillow of sonic goodness carefully built and constructed from a selection of classic, and oftentimes rare, vinyl records both released recently as well as over course of the past two decades, manipulated in true original DJ fashion, climaxing in a sequence of highly abstract, yet somewhat groovy and danceable pieces for ChillOut floors which, at least, provide a few advanced rhythmic structures to finally get the party started.

Ingebrigt Haker Flaten - (Exit) Knarr [Odin Records]

Put out on the circuit on September 24th, 2k21 via the ever active Odin Records imprint is "(Exit) Knarr", the next album commissioned by the Vossajazz festival and one that celebrates the three decades of activity on the Norwegian - and international - scene bass player Ingebrigt Haker Flaker can look back on in 2k21. Rolled out over six individual pieces and a total runtime of approx. 44 minutes the bassist, alongside a plethora of collaborating artists which are credited in detail for their contribution down to handclaps and on which stereo channel their part is audible, pays homage to a wide variety of cities he either lived in or feels a special connection to, starting with the driving, excited and complex polyrhythms of "Miles Ave (For Austin)" which bring on a certain funkiness and set the vibe for things to come like the subsequent "Brinken (For Trondheim)" which embarks on a dreamier, slighty twangy journey led by free floating electric guitars and a certain feel for balearic sunsets as well as early (Post) Progressive Rock explorations before "Hakkaran (For Opdal)" surprisingly amalgamates deep Jazz with elements of longing Tex Mex fusion for scorching hot summer evenings. The subsequent "A La Lala Love You (For Chicago)" sees quite a lot of swinging uptempo things going on alongside perfectly executed brass stabs and tight, steaming hot solo excursions, "Chaos Pad (For Mexico City)" weighs in tense, nightly and agitated Jazz Noir on various, ever meandering tempo signatures, aggressively screaming saxophones and hammering pianos for an intense sonic climax on the longplayer before the concluding "Museumsplein (For Amsterdam)" brings forth a widescreen cinematic approach perfectly fitting for an experimental road movie closing scene in which the main protagonist and his girl ride off into the sunset in a classic convertible. If this speaks to your taste in all things Jazz and beyond... go check!

Nasturtium - Please Us [Room40 Promo]

Also scheduled for release on the digital circuit via Australia's Room40-imprint on September 17th, 2k21 is "Please Us", the five track debut album cooked up by the L.A.-based duo Nasturtium which combines the musical forces of Erin Dawson and Geneva Skeen over the course of roughly 38 minutes. Combining their influences including Ambient, Drone and even Doom Metal to create a unique sonic palette via the digital exchange of sound files over the internet the albums opener "Across Withered Grass" amalgamates brooding bass riffs, desolate and slightly off-kilter guitars and electronic backings to sonically depict barren, well icey landscapes not far off the arctic circle whereas "I Remember Everything, Almost Constantly" comes across as a warmer, more melancholia-driven and somewhat even folksy, naturalistic and inward looking piece in direct comparison to its predecessor. The subsequent cut that is "The Seat Of Compassion" keeps up with a rather brittle and decayed folksy guitar texture alongside scenic, large scale Dark Ambient panoramas, "Masseter" presents the most peaceful and comforting take on mixing up Instrumental Folk naturalisms and unsettling electronic textures on this album whilst the concluding cut that is "Earth Priority" weighs in barely audible echoes of Rock'n'Roll x PostRock loops buried by fm transmission artefacts and low quality emitters, later partially drowned in layers of Ambient pads and gently touched PopAmbient-leaning guitar strings for a closing. A well interesting and defo unusual release for the Room40 camp which sees the label stepping away from being a pure Ambient imprint despite still covering the range of what could be called Deep Listening Music with this one.

Marina Rosenfeld - Teenage Lontano [Room40 Promo]

Another fresh album released by the Australian label Room40 on October 15th, 2k21 is Marina Rosenfeld's "Teenage Lontano", a roughly 38 minutes spanning longplay piece comprised of two extended works by the US-based artist and composer. Whilst "Teenage Lontano", a 2008-recorded cover version x interpretation of György Ligeti's classic orchestra piece from 1960, sees Marina Rosenfeld embark on a journey into somewhat retrofuturist, yet well unsettling and tense Ambient / Cold Ambient territories in which the ever morphing tones, bleeps, sweeps and trickles resemble a never ending stream of data moving back and forth through a global labyrinth of subsurface wires which are confining things unspoken of living in humungous underground vaults in ever lasting darkness whilst shimmering choral non-vocalisms provide a silver lining of hope at the sonic horizon the cryptically named "roygbiv&b (Version For South London)", recorded at the South London Gallery in 2k14, weighs in a fascinating, soulful and reverberating call-and-response approach for a large choir recorded from quite a distance, starting out deep, solemn and minimalistic yet working its way up wave after wave only to reach intense heights that can only be described as deeply spiritual for a lack of a better term, partially accompanied and x or interrupted by longing, siren'esque sinewaves and earth shaking low end rumbles. Highly recommended, especially for the second cut on this album. Get.

Duo Sutera Novali - s/t [Aut Records 075]

Put on the cicuit via the Italian Aut Records imprint on September 27th, 2k21 is the self-titled album by Duo Sutera Novali, a new formation comprised of piano player Ermanno Novali and violinist Virginia Sutera. Drawing inspiration from musical research and non-idiomatic inspiration the two artists cater a five compositions spanning longplay piece on which all pieces are subsequently numbered in ancient Roman numerals, setting the vibe right for the musical content to come over the course of roughly 46 minutes - a masterly display of a free floating musical dialogue between both the two artists and their respective instruments, working their way from a tender start in (Neo)Classical / Modern Classical music towards well dramatic, expressive heights and beautifully longing, timeless melancholia which evokes memories of what used to be Chamber Music in eras long gone whereas specific sequences, especially in the energetic, powerful closing piece "V." provide a lot of musical drive for formal courtly dances. A fascinating piece which makes it hard to identify which parts of the sonic journey came to be via pure improvisation and which were probably previously composed. Go check!

Notstandskomitee - Theme From Space Guards [Block4]

And it is finally happening. Malte Steiner's long standing project named Notstandskomitee is back on the vinyl circuit these days with a special gem not only speaking to all fans of raw Electro, 8bit bleeps and Vaporwave but also to die hard fans of retro-leaning Computer Game Music. Put on the circuit via Block4 as a limited edition of 300 12" copies pressed on beautiful translucent orange vinyl the "Theme From Space Guards" EP caters a menu of four not exactly new Notstandskomitee cuts that were originally programmed and recorded in 2005 for Steiner's very own video game of the same name as this release. Starting out with the title track on A1 we're drawn into a sonic realm of 80s Miami neon glitz, Munich Disco bass lines and shiny synth melodies atop a raw, lofi drum machine foundation whereas the subsequent "Battle On Mars" weighs in tense, highly dramatic Electro for fans of labels like Bunker, Bunker Darknet or RotterHague Records, once again accompanied by crystalline, ethereal synth lines as well as hard hitting percussion shots for those who know. On the flip we've got "Skycity", another drifting SpaceElectro excursion well suitable for those who already hold imprints like Das Drehmoment or Astro Chicken in high regards alongside compilation series like 'Cosmic Machine' whereas "Cosmos" fully indulges in playful, frolicking spaced out Synth elegies and uplifting, almost groovy electroid rhythms for a joyful closing. Lovely.

Flin Van Hemmen - You Can Know Where The Bombs Fell [Neither / Nor Records 019]

Recently released via Neither / Nor Records is "You Can Know Where The Bombs Fell", the third subsequent album released on the label by former Dutch Jazz drummer and now composer Flin Van Hemmen. Created between 2k18 and 2k20 and partially based on - processed and modified - samples from a previous recording session featuring Todd Neufeld on acoustic guitar and Eivind Opsvik on double bass the roughly 41 minutes spanning longplay piece aims to break those samples down into irrecognizable micro-loops which are then used as building blocks for new individual compositions of spine-tingling and oftentimes well futuristic nature like the glacial, frosty Ambient-leaning opener "Heels Rise" which is garnished with distorted and unsettling remnants of speech evoking memories of lost radio communication later accompanied by ethereal, non-vocal background choirs whereas the subsequent cut "These Are The Gateways" caters crackly, sub-heavy and tense DarkAmbient alongside ominous and desolate piano melodies being blown over from quite a distance and the short excursion into places "Where Mushrooms Grow" reveals a sequence of unsettling bass pulses emerging from brittle Field Recordings of what possibly was a nightly forest or park at the time. Furthermore "Epoch" brings forth growling, tectonic low end shiftings and chiming piano improvisations as well as undefined street scene atmospheres later evolving into an array of peaceful, carefully arranged harmonic loops which provide a silver lining at the horizon, the title track "Where The Bombs Fell" perfecty defines the genre drawer of DarkAmbient for this album before "The Blood Of All Nature" brings on the most rhythmic, mechanical and loop based compositional approach, combining electroacoustic vibes with washed out, defragmented guitar improvisations for highly advanced underground ChillOut dancefloors whereas the final cut "Made Visible" fuses more calm and nightly DarkAmbient with plucked guitar and piano minimalisms for a closing. Highly recommended for all fans of Deep Listening Music and beyond.

Robert Takahashi Crouch - Jubilee [Room40]

Scheduled for release on October 15th, 2k21 via Australia's Room40 label is "Jubilee", the new album produced and conceived by Los Angeles-based artist Robert Takahashi Crouch who caters a menu of three extended Drone works on this 38 minutes spanning longplay piece. Influenced by and paying homage to significant events in Crouch's personal life and therefore of very personal intimate nature as well as - not only titlewise - dealing with the concept of judeo-christian "Jubilee" being a tradition of forgiveness the album starts on an intense, monumental and somewhat even klaxon'esque tip when it comes to "A Ritual" which, due to its brooding and even slightly omninous nature, could probably even announce heavenly judgement and cleansing to come whereas "I've Been Part Of Evil Doing" presents more of a calm and glacial, almost ethereal take on stripped down Ambient minimalism for inward-looking self-reflection whereas the concluding "Reconciliation" provides inner peace indeed, weighing in the most melodic and classic angle on Ambient music on this album which will likely be appreciated by those following artists like Cass. and the likes of which are known and loved for their soothing, ever meandering streams of sonic goodness by many genre aficionados these days.

Alberto Braida, Silvia Bolognesi & Cristiano Calcagnile - Cats In The Kitchen [We Insist! Records]

Released via We Insist! Records on October 15th, 2k21 is "Cats In The Kitchen", the newest, eight tracks and approx. 41 minutes spanning album conceived by Italian composer and piano player Alberto Braida which was realized and recorded with the help of Silvia Bolognesi on double bass and Cristiano Calcagnile on drums and percussion. Inspired and influenced by a drawing created by his, then way younger, daughter Maddalena the sound and atmosphere of this longplay piece gravitates towards an easy, friendly and playful, probably even classy BarJazz-leaning vibe at first glance, presenting an especially swinging nature in cuts like "La Giostra / Cane E Gatto", yet at further investigation turns out to be more complex and multilayered than it seems, oftentimes providing a copius dialogue between the individual players and their musical approach, resulting in an overall body of work which is both soothing and pleasant to the ear whilst providing an underlying layer of intricacy, skill and sonic richness for the musically trained Jazz connaisseur. If one of these qualities is speaking to you, go and check this one out.

Giacomo Zanus - Kora [Aut Records 073]

Released via Italian avantgarde imprint Aut Records on June 28th, 2k21 is Giacomo Zanus' "Kora", the latest and somewhat self-titled album created by the quartet of the same name - comprised of Giorgio Pacorig, Mattia Magatelli and Marco D'Orlando working alongside the groups leader and visionary whose main approach lies in the fusion of composition and free improvisation and the creation of a somewhat dreamy amalgamation of both electronic soundscapes and proper irl instruments. This said, the nine tracks on this 55 spanning album provide an overall twangy and laid back, well comforting and Easy Listening-leaning experience, oozing an atmosphere of warmth and relaxation from the very first moments of the opening cut "Every Little Gift Has A Little Secret" onwards, followed by tender, loving, somewhat folksy and most beautiful piano lines in "Something Lost, Something Gained" which find their even more romantic and intimate, later freefloating, jazzed out and improvised continuation in "Let Kindness Lift Your Soul". With "Charmolypi / Mystikos" the Kora quartet enters a sonic realm as innocent, joyful and pure as early flower power x hippie culture before being taken over by shrieking digital feedback noise throughout the tunes very last seconds, "Prayer" takes on a nightly, stripped down and minimalistic path in Contemporary Jazz for the lack of a better description, followed on a similar, yet more jazzy and shimmering note by the short interlude that is "And Then We Looked Up To The Stars". Furthermore "The Dream Not Yet Dreamed" takes minimalism in Jazz to a new level with its tenderly plucked bass notes and dubbed out, psychedelia-infused instrumental layers slowly turning into a scenic, panorama-sized variation of Americana vibewise, "E Tu, Cosa Cherchi?" comes at us with a classic Viennese Future Jazz vibe (remember Cheap Records, anyone?) and the final "Postludium" introduces some sort of Ambient-leaning, well maritime melancholia for a closing. Beautifully intimate music to be shared with a good friend - or a deeply loved one.

Michel Redolfi - Sonic Waters: Underwater Music 1979 - 1987 [Sub Rosa 483]

Recently released via the longtime standing experimental electronic staple Sub Rosa as an addition to their 'Early Electronics' series is "Sonic Waters: Underwater Music 1979 - 1987", a ten tracks and approx. 52 minutes spanning compilation album dedicated to the works of composer Michel Redolfi, conceptual inventor and mastermind behind the idea of underwater concerts performed in both large scale pools as well as in natural environments like the Pacific Ocean and other inundated places. With water and the ocean in mind as a source of inspiration and basic fundamental carrier of sound waves it is no surprise that all of Redolfi's compositions provide a certain floating quality, an ebb-and-flow of dreamlike melodic movements meandering in between Synth, Cosmic and ProtoAmbient realms mostly based on soft, slightly psychedelic pads and string arrangements accompanied by enchanted flute lines, tender harp tones as well as retrofuturist synthesizer bleeps, scintillating cascades of sound and - most prevalent in "Nocturnal" as well as in the brooding, spine-tingling piece that is "Fractions (La Nouvelle Atlantide)" - a few deeper, darker and solemn moments in between. Even without factoring in the conceptual approach of these pieces being composed specifically for an underwater performance context "Sonic Waters" provides an exciting journey for fans of all things ProtoAmbient, Cosmic and Balearic for a reason, especially for the chiming, crystalline and time-defying charm of "Carillon", the fragile, light-hearted and yet somewhat crackly aesthetics of "La Jolia Cove *Live Recording" and the haunted, dreamlike atmospheres to be found in the 12 minutes closing piece "Sunny Afternoon At Bird Rock Beach".

Nils Økland - Glødetradar [Hubro Music]

Put on the circuit via Norway's ever active Hubro Music label on October 10th, 2k21 is "Glødetradar", the latest album outing by dedicated hardanger fiddle player and composer Nils Økland. Commissioned for the Vossajazz 2016 festival and realized with the help of a plethora of renowned contributors the eight tracks and roughly 39 minutes spanning album sees Økland focusing on hardanger fiddle and the rare viola d'amore with these instruments embedded in a scenic, oftentimes longing and emotionally touching setting that reflects both the classic beauty and simplicity of rural, ancient Norwegian Folk music as well as a deep knowledge and understanding of minimalistic, yet contemporary Jazz - especially and best reflected in the stripped down bass sequences featured in the calm, melancholia-inducing meanderings of "Rull" which slowly bends and moves like a large river as well as in the dramatic melodic climax to be found in "Glør"- whilst elements of (Neo)Classical / Contemporary Classical music as well as scenic Chamber Music might be more prevalent in the most beautiful sonic stream of "Linja" as well as in "Vala", the most tender and pure piece on this well deep and autumnal album that is best consumed in silence in an intimate, candle-lit setting with a loved one by one's side just to name a few. Lopez Trio - Live At Roulette [Relative Pitch Records]

Released via Relative Pitch Records on August 27th, 2k21 is "Live At Roulette", the new, roughly 51 minutes spanning album by the FreeJazz- / Free Improv-leaning three piece outfit that is the Brandon Lopez led Lopez Trio which is accompanied by guest performances of Cecilia Lopez. Recorded live at Brooklyn's Roulette Intermedium venue the longplay outing comes at us with titles like "March, Motherfuck", "Dance, Motherfuck" or the great interplay of words that is "My Heart Is In The US Fall Apart" which already speak volumes of the innate, yet well suppressed anger to be expected in the music presented even before one might have listened to the very first seconds of the album. And there it is, starting out with thundering drums and shrieking, off kilter and somewhat Delta-leaning sax lines of a certain melancholia before moving forward into stripped down, muffled and fever'ish rhythmic territories or more plangent Delta Blues-references whilst bits like "Time Is Up Or Lite Jazz Patina" are weighing in a more nightly, inward-looking take on Jazz / Future Jazz abstractions, "Born Slumming It" turns out to be dense, hell'ish and highly intense doomed Jazz without being DoomJazz at all whereas the concluding cut "Motherfuck, I Said Dance" rolls out an intricate structure of corresponding rolls and polyrhythms for a closing which, in their ever growing intensity, could be the soundtrack for some dark rituals. Quite an intense album to review at 1030 am in the morning after a night out.

Toshimaru Nakamura - Culvert: No-Input Mixing Board 10 [Room40]

Scheduled for release via the Australian Ambient staple that is Room40 on October 8th, 2k21 is "Culvert: No-Input Mixing Board 10", the next iteration in Toshimaru Nakamura's ongoing exploration of the sonic capacities inherent to a console mixing board used and abused solely on its own, disconnected from any additonal instrument or its original purpose. The result of the tenth take on this ongoing approach are a total of eight brand new cuts on this album which are stretched out over approximately 42 minutes in total, coming in from a surprisingly rhythmic and, though repetetive, non-minimalist angle in which heavy sequences of grinding, pulsating Rhythm Industrial resembling structures provide a sense of heavy machinery and its innate physicality manifesting in mechanical movements whereas other pieces could be filed under the flag of ever meandering Clicks'n'Cuts related polyrhythms, weigh in longing, crackling, isolationist and well futuristic Dark Ambient / IDM crossover sequences or even emulate dry, slow motion Industrial Techno for fans of early - a.k.a. 1999/2000 - works by Fred Bigot who later became well known under the name of Electronicat. Good stuff, this. Check.

Ka Baird & Pekka Airaksinen - Hungry Shells [RVNG Intl. / FRKWYS 017 Promo]

Scheduled for release via RVNG Intl. sister label FRKWYS on October 22th, 2k21 is "Hungry Shells", the most recent in a series of what is referred to in the accompanying press release as intergenerational collaborations put out and initiated through the ever busy imprint. With the most recent outing bringing together NYC-based vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Ka Baird and now passed Finnish avantgarde composer Pekka Airaksinen who's played a role in the art and music scene from the late 60s onwards "Hungry Shells" presents a seven track and and 38 minutes lasting journey into a sonic realm shaped and informed by Pekka's love and interest for buddhism, even using certain spiritual texts and lectures as a lyrical foundation for the works presented on this album whilst musically venturing off into ethereal, dreamlike and psychoactive Spoken Word realms, psychedelic loop collages infused with elements of theatre, opera, avantgarde, dada and heavy 808 kicks whereas other pieces like "Parallax" offer multilayered rhythmic structures far exceeding genres like Ambient, IDM or Electronica, bring on highly unsettling, fright-inducing and probably reversed atmospheres ("Grey Body" / "Roseclouds") before the concluding title track "Hungry Shells" provides a spine-tingling sense of fever'ish minimalism that would've sat well with any haunted black and white b- or c-movie horror flic out there for a closing. Highly recommended.

Paroxysm - Tendencies / Basalt [self-released Promo]

Coming in via mail recently is "Tendencies / Basalt", the new album release crafted and conceived by Paroxysm which is the musical nom de guerre employed by Werner Dafeldecker and Roy Carroll for their combined sonic ventures. Self-released and put on the circuit on August 21st, 2k21 we the roughy 51 minutes spanning album is split into two extended tracks, both comprised of a combination of electroacoustic media and double bass, with the opening cut that is "Tendencies" exploring a cold, futuristic and somewhat metallic realm structured by compressed, reverberating and or spooky, hollow thuds of not necessarily rhythmic origin as well as minimalist atmospheres and sparse, haunting, desolate string pluckings to create a feel of most isolationism and all covering eternal darkness whereas the subsequent second cut that is "Basalt" provides a warmer, more nightly and comforting take on electroacoustic Ambient darkness, catering an array of longing, streteched out, inward-looking and melancholia-inducing tones sequentially evolving into intense, agitated and somewhat klaxon'esque movements before falling back to its original form, meandering between various scenic iterations and therefore providing an essential, highly recommended example of why the approach of electroacoustic composition never lost its fascination since this specific angle on sonic creation was first explored many many decades ago. Thomas Köner - Aubrite [Mille Plateaux]

And here we go with another re-issued classic on the freshly revived Mille Plateaux-labels which recently rereleased Thomas Köner's "Aubrite" which originally saw the light of day on the Dutch label Barooni back in 1995. What used to be a five track longplay piece a good 26 years ago is now expanded by two additional versions, covering a playtime of roughly 64 minutes, opening with the trembling low frequency minimalism of "Nuuk" which exists on the brink between audibility and pure physical experience depending on the PA system it's performed on and so does the subsequent, warm and all embracing sub Drone / Minimal Ambient effort that is the title bearing track "Aubrite" which slowly develops into one of Köner's trademark glacial sound sculptures whereas "Grohuk (Day)" perfectly depicts the solemn uniformity of arctic whites which has been a major influence on the artists overall work in this field and "Takla-Makan" present a sequence of growling, earth shaking low frequency pulses alongside ghostly, minimalist Cold Ambient atmospheres. Furthermore "Grohuk (Night)" seem to be even more solemn and ceremonial than its daylight variant, the additional "Nuuk *Version" provides more calm and comforting low end darkness before "Grohuk" waves goodbye in a well scenic, beauteous and almost cinematic Ambient. Deep Listening Music for late night meditations. Get.
