Mats Erlandsson - Minnesmärke [Hallow Ground Promo]
Released via Swiss imprint Hallow Ground on November 6th, 2k20 is "Minnesmärke", the first ever longplay format Swedish artist Mats Erlandsson puts out through label. Based on a quartet setting with Hilary Jeffery, Gaianeh Pilossian and Yair Elazar Glotman on trombone, tuba, violin and double bass whilst Erlandsson takes care of 'everything else' according to the accompanying press sheet the two long compositions on this album commissioned by the Non Existent Center were inspired by and recorded at the former iron ore mine Ställbergs Gruva which is seen as a place of valuable socio-economic history and deeply linked to the welfare and changes taking place in the community surrounding it. This said, both the 19 minutes spanning opening tune "Vilja" as well as the subsequent, 22 minutes of "Slakt" are referring to this tension in their combination of Deep Listening Music informed, ever droning Ambient spheres and vast, slow moving, yet panoramic harmonic changes which are making up the majority of each compositions forefront whilst being contrasted by mechanical movements, Field Recordings of scraping metals, icy winds as well as other noises roughly to be filed under the flag of 'industrial', not in terms of a genre but more in terms of industrialized manufacturing processes, hidden deep in the background of each pieces mix to create a vibe that is about to be well received by Ambient headz, followers of dramatic (Neo)Classical / Contemporary Classical music as well as score collectors for a reason. Deep and filled with gravitas.
