Yong Yandsen / Christian Meaas Svendsen / Paal Nilssen-Love - Hungry Ghosts [Nakama Records 019]

Fresh on the circuit via the Norwegian Nakama Records label is "Hungry Ghosts", a special live recorded album capturing a performance by Yong Yandsen, Christian Meaas Svendsen and PNL Records-mastermind Paal Nilssen-Love which took place in Malaysia's capital city of Kuala Lumpur. As regular readers of these pages might've already guessed from the names involved in this project we're dealing with quite an intense musical journey here, de-evolving from a wild, thundering start in FreeJazz / FreeImprov to more of a classic, yet slightly off-kilter Jazz vibe within about 15 minutes before picking up pace again, led by a dominant, oftentime shrieking saxophone alongside used and abused bass and drums partially producing sounds that these instruments weren't intended to produce initially. A wild ride of pretty much indescribable nature which surely is about to be well enjoyed by those familiar with the work of the musicians involved in here. Call this a niche release, but call it a good one!
