Sun Ra - Singles: The Definitive 45s Collection 1952 - 1991 [Strut Promo]
Sun Ra, an artist as canonical as mysterious and outerworldly. Praised to highest heights by many of his die-hard fans, influential to those who followed in the Jazz and FreeJazz scene and beyond and yet an artist whose work never fully clicked with us throughout all the years we've been reviewing and listening to music. This might not be changed completely by the "Singles: The Definitive 45s Collection 1952 - 1991" which collects an astounding heapload of 65 tunes taken from and exclusively released on mostly very limited seven inch records over the span of almost 40 years, tunes that were not to be found on any Sun Ra / Sun Ra Arkestra albums or which weren't even released as 45 although planned to be. But no matter if we're converted to die hard Sun Ra fans or not - the amount of music alone and the stylistic diversity of this collection is well impressive. From Spoken Word excursions to - at the time - mainstream compatible Jazz / Soul songs to fast paced Instrumental Jazz, Doo Wop, FreeJazz, Hardbop, decent bar tunes and beyond we're experiencing the full creative spectrum of the artists work on this one which is about to please connaisseurs due to unearthing previously hard to come by songs whilst those only starting to discover and embrace the massive Sun Ra catalogue only now surely will appreciate not having to hunt down rare and hardly seen releases from a distant past but being served the full package with extended liner notes instead. Something interesting of historic value, this is.
