Thoughts On 2009

Last day of the year, time to look back upon some twelve months antithetical as antithetical can be. On the one hand I've been playing more than ever which means a minimum of average two times a week, on the other I've seen a musical output as uninspiring and of diminished quality as I've never seen before proven by the fact that in the first time ever since I compile a personal monthly DJ chart there's been times when I couldn't even think of ten - yes, 10 that is - quality records fresh on the circuit I've heard or bought. And this hasn't happened only once but at least in approximately half of 2009. So what happened?
Audiomatique, Dessous and Poker Flat Recordings delivered quality stuff, the last mentioned even some of their best 12"es ever, but talking about many others there's been much failure. Dubstep degenerated to either some cheap dancefloor fodder with a wobbly bass, a bunch of boring bootlegs or a mixture of Detroit influences and some stripped down PostUKG-Breakbeat. I've seen Detroit, I've seen Breakbeat and UKG so I don't see the point why this is regarded as sth. new, some even came up with strange descriptions like DubTechno or TechStep which truly have different meanings. No need for mixing things up. And for the Dubstep that went experimental - Electronica / Intelligent Techno / IDM has been around for ages. Try and do different. Then there's UK Funky, another new thing appearing on the scene - next hype. But, has anybody apart from Martyn, who made the connection clear in an interview, listened to some early 90's Strictly Rhythm-tunes? No? You should, coze there's the same syncopic latin percussions on top of a straight 4/4 drumset. Leave out the 4/4 and add some more breaky beat and there it is - UK Funky. Invented about 15 or more years in the past. Then there was Niche / Bassline, a thing emerging from Sheffield that I'd really hope to see break through in Germany in 2009 but it didn't. Maybe the distributors are, in these trouble times, too afraid to bring them releases to Germany, coze they don't want to experience the same that happened to UKG some ten years ago. Some rare records are coming through, a few of them good, a few of them nothing more than ElectroHouse with a bigger bass. Hope this isn't the standard of this music in UK now and, if not, the German clubbers will recognize this musical phenomenon soon, coze whenever I've been playing this music out the reactions were quite good.
But at least some good things happened musically. DeepHouse, classic House and DubTechno - the true meaning - returned and several labels were putting out good new stuff in these genres. Instra:Mental delivered a blueprint of futuristic, Electronica-influenced HiTech-R'n'B with their massive tune "Watching You", MicroTechno-imprint Perlon took the risk to publish Shackleton's new album as triple-vinyl and I had some very very proper nights playing out some early NuSkoolBreaks and/or Oldskool / UK Hardcore as well as early 90s RaveTechno to audiences only as old as the records I spun. Good to see that the raw energy of this music never seems to diminish and that today's kids still can feel it although they're used to productions more hi-tech, clean and polished. Guess that proves my theory that a good tune is still a good tune, no matter what the production sounds like.
Talking formats I'm still one of the rare DJ's withstanding the so called digital revolution and timecoded, mp3-based way of playing out in clubs. As Sven Väth recently said in one of his interviews - one starts to feel like a dinosaur when nearly everyone else enters the club with nothing more than a laptop but vinyl still feels right and it seems that the club kids are reacting different and more ecstatic to turntable trickery when they can see that every cut, scratch, sample and mix is crafted with the DJ's hands only, seeing them records spin and fingers turning knobs and faders instead of having someone staring into an illuminated screen and moving mouse or trackpad. So expect true skool DJ'ing in 2010 when you come to see me on the decks, coze this is the way I've done for more than 10 years now and this is the skool I'm sticking to. Period.

Time Warp or Matrix Error?

Something really, really strange happened last night. Left the bed @ 03:00 a.m. to take a piss and checked the alarm clock when I came back - 03:01 a.m. on the display. Then I turned round, trying to sleep. I couldn't, so I checked the clocks display again after approx. 5 minutes. And - quelle surprise! - the displayed time was 02:53 a.m. . I felt quite puzzled about the time moving backwards and I don't have any proper explanation for this apart from a broken clock, which, after this incident, seems to work nicely again. Could anybody please come up with a proper, logical suggestion how this could happen. And no - I wasn't drunk, suffering from fever or on drugs.

Wive - PVLL [Exile On Mainstream Promo]

It's mid-december now, 2010 is near and Exile On Mainstream are already announcing their first release for february - 5th to be exact - which is gonna be the new and very first album of Wive named "PVLL". The driving forces behind Wive as a new band outfit are Hannah Murray and Matt Irvin, former members of A Whisper In The Noise from whom they split in autumn 2008, plus helping hands of Isaac Everhart, Dustin Marks and Meghan Irwin, Matt's wife. The bunch of them serve a musical vision strictly lead by a straight DIY-attitude, that can be described as fey and engrossed, partly transferring Desert Rock-influences into the realms of orchestral Indie Pop that mixes up with some Shoegazing Electronica. Deep, autumnal or even wintery music that as well features classical instrumentation in some tracks, talking violin and piano here, and will be well appreciated by all lovers of fragile musical beauty. Fans of Belle & Sebastian might check this one out as well.

Steve Bug - Collaboratory Remixes Vol. 2 [Poker Flat Recordings 109B Promo]

Out soon via Poker Flat Recordings is part 2 of Steve Bug's "Collaboratory Remixes" 12" series, this time seeing Ben Klock, Deetron and John Daly at the controls. For sure Deetron's re-rub of "Trees can Dance" is the most exciting here, serving warm bassline figures and deep 'troity melancholia - a combination that always works out for me and my sets and due to that is loved and played to death, this mix will be stuck in my box for ages. John Daly's remix of "Trust In Me" seems to be on a slo-mo Cosmic House tip and is a tune made for small connaisseur clubs, terraces or very late closing hours. Ben Klock on the flip does good as well but his re-work of the collaborational "Month Of Sip" is too tool'ish to really stick out of the amount of tracks released every week.

Moodymanc - Omlette [Dessous Recordings 091 Promo]

Upcoming on Dessous Recordings is Moodymanc's "Omlette", which is the labels cat.no. 091 and a quality tool when it comes to deep, slightly Dub-flavored House music. On the flip there's Dplay on remix duties, going even deeper and keeping the crowd pumping whilst the "Taker *Drum Dub" on B2 builds tension on the dancefloor due to its deep, quite tribal feel that perfectly matches with tracks like the legandary Ibadan uber-hit "Timbuktu" that still sets floors on fire when played out today.

Road Trip Stories: Small Crowds & Some Bad Luck

Day 1:

Waking up early to hit the road again, too early after having spent the last night watching sci-fi stuff on TV. "Stargate SG-1" and "Stargate Atlantis" are highly addictive to me so I was up 'til about 4 a.m. , a fact that double hit me as I'm suffering from the snuffles and a pink eye. But whatever, clothes, stuff & the box are prepared for the upcoming Plutonium Pogo Tour with Dadajugend Polyform and Das Audiolith. Leaving Hamburg heading towards Oettinger Villa in Darmstadt we lost the first 45 minutes being stuck in a traffic jam even before getting out of town and it took way longer than expected to finally arrive there. The place itself is a formidable old mansion indeed, formally squatted and now alternatively run for ages, with nice staff, partly impressive antique furnishings and a basement with a very underground feel where the lot of us were about to play, ready to rock the house. But for some reason the promo quite fully failed and only a very few people showing up - maybe due to the fact that it was a thursday night and a quite unusual date for parties in that place, maybe due to the fact that there was a big demonstration with a spontaneous MinimalTechno after party going in the nearby town of Frankfurt where the authorities had cleared the squatted university campus. Bad luck.

Day 2:

Arrival in Leipzig, one hour too early to set up things at Sweat Club so we're spending some time and dough at Bagel Brothers - coffee and sweets. Bad luck struck again as we heard about La Roux playing Leipzig the same day, sponsored and promoted by a big commercial radio station. Sharing the same target audience is not necessarily a good thing on days like this. Anyway, Sweat Club is a good one as well, apart from the fact that they chose to have an Allen & Heath Xone 92 mixer for their DJ booth instead of a Pioneer DJM 500 / 600 / 800 - I really can't stand this A&H mixer and I don't know why ppl making such a lot of noise about it, to me it's crap. Helped Dadajugend Polyform with some technical issues appearing throughout their sound check and enjoyed their show which really has evolved since their last Plutonium Pogo appearance, not only due to Frau Lehmann - you gotta see her on stage, massive! - joining the band but as well to musical improvements and a few new songs included in their set. "Small Town Gossip" is still stuck in my eardrums. Played some NuSkoolBreaks to a small crowd at the end of night, had to tell an annoying and dead drunk Indie geezer to either get his hands off my deck or getting his nose punched in and left l8r on with a strange feeling about that. Leipzig.

Day 3:

Off to Erfurt to play at Stadtgarten , but before that I discovered a second hand record store only a few meters from where our car was so I just had to crash in quickly and for a few minutes only. Stumbled upon two records I've been looking for for ages: Daffy Duck feat. The Groove Gang - "Party Zone", which is quite a funny piece of 1991 EuroDance trash and LDC's "Die Schwarze Zone", a legendary 1991 Techno classic featuring the very great lyrics "Willkommen in der Schwarzen Zone. Wir schicken Dich ins All." Plus: I discovered a stereophonic test record to adjust hi-fi stereo systems - not that unusual but this one is originally made and manufactured in the former German Democratic Republic, shortly known as East Germany by VEB Deutsche Schallplatten Berlin DDR. Rare stuff. Nothing spectacular happenend in Erfurt that night, a small crowd as well up for the concert but not that up for the after show party, a few dancing people, NuSkoolBreaks and oldskool'ish RaveTecho and an early closing.

Day 4:

Now, back in Hamburg and still not that healthy. Guess my eyes are getting better and the snuffles are gone but I feel exhausted. The all over feeling about the last days is good, but still the outcome of these three days is not as expected. Next time will be better.
