Christian Harder: New Album Released As Free Download

These are trouble times for the music industry as a whole and for struggling, independent underground artists as well. Due to this Hamburg-based artist Christian Harder decided to release his new album "It Was Love After All" as FREE DOWNLOAD from his very own website, instead of holding it back and trying to find a label for it which he has done for a while. As I've enjoyed prelistening files of these songs for about year or even longer there's no other option but to recommend to get hold of these quite fast.

Here's what the artist himself says in an email sent out today:

"Auf meiner Website findet ihr den Link zum neuen Christian Harder Album "It Was Love After All". Ihr könnt es downloaden und an eure Liebsten verschenken. Oder selber hören. Oder eine CD brennen. Geht alles. Geld verdient man mit Musik eh keine mehr, deshalb lieber einen Betrag an eine Hilfsorganisation eurer Wahl einzahlen. Danke.

Viel Spaß.
Christian"

Lagowski Live @ Knowledge 06/1992

Those were the days... I miss that total rave age.

Helgi Jonsson - For The Rest Of My Childhood [Sevenahalf]

Scheduled for october 9th via Sevenahalf is Helgi Jonsson's new album "For The Rest Of My Childhood". The iceland-based musician serves a ten track-menu of withdrawn, fragile but still emotionally intense songs that, seen in the whole context of an album, deliver a perfect soundtrack for autumnal, melancholy-driven red wine-sessions by the fireside. Nice.

Detroit Grand Pubahs - BUttFUnkula & The Remixes From Earth Vol.1 [Detelefunk 010 Promo]

All earthlings and Techno-headz watch for this 12" that's coming atcha soon'ish via Detroit Grand Pubah's intergalactic Detelefunk-imprint. What's on it? Three tracks taken from formerly released DGP-album's and remixed by some of the finest Techno-producers of today. In detail: Samuel L. Session transfers "Dr. Bootygrabber" to a higher level and transforms the tune into a nice piece of basic contemporary Club Techno that's nothing but pure hypnosis. Robert Hood turns "Funk Y'all" upside down, serving a remarkable piece of his trademark raw minimalist style, whilst DJ 3000's Motech Remix of "Stalking you" can be described as a deepe, tripped out Technno journey from the dark side. Highly recommended.

Claire Ripley - Labyrinth [Dessous Recordings 089 Promo]

To be released as cat.no. 089 of Dessous Recordings is Claire Ripley's "Labyrinth" E.P. - a fresh face added to the stable, head of her own label Phobic Records and versatile producer talent as the title track proves which is as well remixed by Gorge of 8Bit and Cecille on the flip. Musicwise this one is quite raw and stripped down, nothing more but a pure House groove and a few additional stabs but this is enough to keep the crowd moving and to make up a good tune that easily is summing up what House music is all about: beats, bass, sex and groove. So there is no doubt why he chose this one for his very own label. "Utopia" - Claire's second original track to be found here is of the same kind, though a little more uplifting, so if you like to include very basic but still thrilling tunes in your set this 12" is the right one for you.

Berkson & What - Ghosts [Poker Flat Recordings 107 Promo]

After a long lasting string of massive 12"es released via Poker Flat Recordings the labels cat.no. 107 by Berkson & What, a double-A-side featuring the tracks "Ghosts" and "In Person" seems to be one acting on a quality level below excellent with average tendencies. Don't get me wrong as we're talking in terms of Poker Flat here which means that average is still beyond a level that other labels would name as good or even better but still those two tracks are a bit tool'ish and do not stick out that much as Poker Flat-released tracks usually do. Guess my favorite out of these two is "In Persona" as it comes with a warmer, housier feel compared to the colder, minimal functionalism of "Ghosts". Not a must have but still properly crafted.

EdDMX On AcidHouse

Via Twitter I just stumbled upon an article in UK's FACT magazine that has Ed DMX of DMX Krew talking about his 20 most favorite AcidHouse-tracks of all time. Read, listen & learn.

Bodymovin [Moonbootique Records Promo]

Fresh on Moonbootique Records is "Bodymovin", the self titled album of the creative production partnership project of DJ Friction and DJ Thomilla which goes under the same name. After having released only two 12"es introducing this new project it seems quite risky to have a full length album following up at this early stage, especially in these trouble times, but sometimes proper self-esteem pays out and this it what happens here, musically and hopefully in sales, too. Since Friction and Thomilla have come a long way and are established names on the HipHop circuit it's quite obvious that those influences are to be recognized in this album as well - not talking straight HipHop here but when it comes to styles as Funk, Disco, a bit of ItaloDisco and producers unique as Yello all these are making waves in this melting pot that can only be described as breed of slow, groovy and partly stripped down ElectroHouse mixed up with influences as mentioned. There's ladies tracks to be found that work best in small, steamy venues run and attended by underground experts as well as functional primetime rockers but all have this specific twist that makes them differ from your regular dancefloor fodder. Any yes, there's samples to be recognized by club veterans, and cowbells, sexy basslines and nice melodies. Well done.

Testsieger - Laguna Fantasia [Freunde Der Analogen Revolution]

On the circuit since september 11th is the new and recent album "Laguna Fantasia", straight out of the studios of the northern Germany-based duo Testsieger. Having seen & appreciated them live in Erlangen while being on tour I'm quite surprised that their album sound is not that Drum'N'Bass-/Breakbeat-influenced as their on stage performance but more referring aesthetically to the german Ingenious Dilletantes-movement and bands like the legendary DAF due to a partial lo-fi attitude caused by the use of vintage equipment as main source for their music plus the fact that the drum set is not that present at the very forefront of the album's mixdown when compared to a live showcase. But no matter what, this album is defo a good one and gets even better if you're able to catch up on their german lyrics meandering between DaDa-influences, irony and self-mockery, dancing and - clearly to be seen by anyone who has ever attended a german dance school in his or her youth - a severe trauma caused by such an institution - but this one is dealt with in a humorous way. Interesting and more important a quite unique one as there is no other comparable band around. Recommended.

Kasper Bjørke & His Friendly Ghost - The Great Derangement [We Love This 002]

Cat.no. 002 of the freshly established We Love This-imprint is "The Great Derangement" by Kasper Bjørke & His Friendly Ghost, whoever this unnamed ghost might be. Musically their main tune seems to be a slowly evolving, slowed down breed of ElectroHouse and Cosmic-influenced DeepHouse which ain't my cup of tea at all. On the flip we'll find this tune remixed by Catz'n'Dogz & Pol On Skandal turning this tune into a more pumping one vibing off on a deeper groove, the same that's to be found in the bonus B2-tune "Sexy Meatballs" as well. Those two tunes might work best when a long club night comes to an end, maybe even as closing tunes, slowing people down and sending them home in the early hours.

Rosenstolz - Ich Bin Mein Haus *Tube & Berger Mixes [Universal / Island]

Well, the Universal / Island music group A&R people must be highly convinced that it might make sense trying to carve out a niche in club music for their successful cheesy Pop band Rosenstolz, otherwise it wouldn't make any sense that they're sending out so many DJ promos with different mixes accompanying each and every of the bands plenty releases. This time they've Tube & Berger on remix duties delivering a warm ElectroHouse vs. Minimal version served on a picture disc plate, a tune that is quite likely to be regarded as proper tool when one refers to their "Mein Haus Ist Dein Haus Dub Mix" musically but when one flips the record and switches to the full vocal mix there's nothing good to be left as the singers voice is just awful and the lyrics senseless. A one sided disc featuring nothing but the dubbed version would've done a better job here.

Marsheaux - Lumineaux Noir [Out Of Line]

Scheduled for september 25th via Out Of line is Marsheux' new album to be released under the name of "Lumineaux Noir" which is to be clearly checked out all those still loving SynthPop from the heart. A true sense for epic 80s songwriting meets uplifting Pet Shop Boys-attitude meets cold plastic eroticism meets original vintage equipment and, most important, the voices of the double-girl package Sophie and Marianthi that've already toured alongside the british head-honchos of female SynthPop: Client. Although there's no doubt that one has to be really into SynthPop-aesthetics to appreciate what's delivered in this pack of thirteen tunes I think this album is about to find its way to clubs and dancefloors of today and if it was released on vinyl I'd surely play out a few songs from the album myself when behind the decks.

Intrauterin Recordings 002 Sold Out

It's been nearly ten years now since Spherical's vinyl debut was released as untitled six track E.P. on my label Intrauterin Recordings and now, after this long time, today I sold the very last two copies to Otaku Records, Hamburg's finest record shop for electronic music. The way has been long and partly troublesome but it feels good to see that finally all copies are gone - and that quality music never ages.

Wretched Hamburg Youth

All the time I hear and read complaints that more and more places and venues providing so-called underground or left-field music are closing down these days, but it seems like no-one makes up their mind on how those places really work, especially how DJ bars work that offer specific music spun live from turntables without demanding any entry fee. Those places are called bars coze they live and survive from selling drinks to their audience. That's where the money comes from to pay rent, electricty, staff and DJ's performing. If there's no money from selling drinks coming in they can't survive for a long time. Simple as bread and butter.

While spinning @ Meaniebar tonite, which wasn't admittedly packed at all, I experienced a good example of ultimate youth dullness. Two girls - one short haired and quite good looking, the other one obviously of asian, maybe vietnamese heritage - come by, sit down outside of the venue, nodding their heads to the music music coming out of our speakers on the street. After they sat for a while, they come in, use our toilets and sit down outside again without buying a drink. Instead of this, they open their bags and share a beer they brought with them, probably cheaply bought at the gas station around despite the cost of the cheapest beer @ Meaniebar is only 2.00 € which isn't a large amount of dough even if you're short of money anyway. Then a friend of them comes along, they finally enter the place, the guy buys one beer which they share - remember: three people, one beer !!! - , they headnod more, obviously like the music played out, sit for about an hour, use the toilets again and leave. What's this fuzz all about? Has anyone taught you about manners and/or respect for what is provided - a nice venue and music you're into? I can't help but feeling pity on those girls.

Road Trip Horror: AK 44 / Giessen

Fact: AK 44 in Giessen is nothing less but a dirty, disgusting shithole of a venue. Sounds drastic but I can't find any warmer words for a place I really looked forward to play at, ready to bash ravers with a massive selection of Niche / 4x4 bangers which I hadn't played throughout our little tour yet. Plus: some ppl were - for what reason ever - saying really nice things about this place which turned out to be the biggest waste I've ever seen in 12+ years of deejaying and I still cannot understand what can be so difficult about setting up a very basic thing like a proper DJ-booth after getting a technical rider asking for

2x DJ-CD-players
2x Technics MK II turntables
1x Pioneer DJM 500 DJ-mixer (alternatively: DJM 600 / 800)
2x Ortofon Concorde styluses
1x DJ booth monitor,

things that aren't special but usual club standard and as well to be found in any, even the smallest DJ bar around.

But this is what we found:

2x DJ-CD-players
2x different, low quality MKII clones, one of them with massive feedback problems
1x shitty Omnitronic bedroom DJ-mixer not at all made for club use
2x Ortofon styluses
- no DJ booth monitor

plus

- a P.A. not able to provide any frequencies below approx. 100 Hz that even would've provided no or even shittier sound if Arnold of Juri Gagarin hadn't fixed it single-handedly
- no accomodation apart from one of the clubs rooms that was converted to our backstage with 2 dirty mattressess and 2 sofas for seven people - a reason why The Dance Inc. decided to book hotel rooms from their own money although the venue should've taken care of this
- no showers
- backstage toilets that were nothing but a pure mess
- and worst of all staff that weren't able or willing to change a thing about any of the mentioned problems

Due to all that and most of all the fact that the turntables weren't working for me there was no other option but to cancel my set on location although, as mentioned before, I've been looking forward to do the show. Furthermore there will be no second try for AK 44 no more as I'm never ever going back there again and if you're an artist or booking agency you're highly recommended to blacklist this venue immediately 'coze I think it's quite likely you''ll be experiencing same or similar problems.

But even this night, one of the darkest since I'm on the DJ-circuit had two highlights - Saskia our driver of the first ever Plutonium Pogo tour was dropping by from her hometown Korbach and I feel always blessed to have her rolling with the crew plus a very nice and long chat with a girl named Diana, which is as well working at AK 44 and seems to be the only staff member capable to understand why I was totally pissed off. She's defo not the one to blame and she knew it but was always apologizing for what happened that night.

Road Trip Stories: Erlangen

Waking up in Erlangen on a saturday morning, clear blue skies and the sun is shining. No hangover. Surprisingly. Playing at E-Werk last nite was proper fun - banging P.A., staff that really took care of us as artists, good food, nice hotel and a mixed crowd willing to dance. And DJ Micha - our host of the night - is a really really friendly guy. A good set for a good party.
To our surprise the club had booked a band named Testsieger to play in the beginning of the show, we weren't aware of that at first but the two of them were cool and played a mixture of live Drum'n'Bass, Electronica and German Indie Pop on a drum set and some vintage synths. Hadn't seen such a project in about 10 years and they easily caught the crowds attention with their live set - good stuff. Right after they had finished I started my set with Boys Of Scandinavia's "Worse Than A Girl" which is one of my secret weapons to puzzle Indie kids as it starts out with the same chords as White Stripe's "7 Nation Army", followed up by stuff like Roger, The Presets, Anne Clarke, Frittenbude, Ira Atari's newest release "Upside Down" and several others, had them folks sing along to a NuSkoolBreaks bootleg of "Outta Space" and killed them with Cut & Run's version of "In For The Pill" before Das Audiolith battered out stuff by Fukkk Offf and loads of NuRave / ElectroPunk shit. And they loved it. A proper night so far, which ended up on a parking lot (again... o_0), drinking with Holger and Enno of Dadajugend Polyform, which introduced their new singer Lena to us - defo a lovely one and I can't wait to see them perform on stage as a triple.

Road Trip Stories

Just arrived in Erlangen for tonite's DJ-gig @ E-Werk a short while ago after being stuck in a quite heavy traffic jam caused by a bicycle accident and now there's the story of last nite to tell before taking a nap.
Rosenkeller in Jena where the whole crew of The Dance Inc., Juri Gagarin, Das Audiolith and me, baze.djunkiii, played to a small but good crowd yesterday is a very nice historical - that means 700+ years old indeed - basement vault with incredibly strange acoustics and partly confused, but always friendly staff. Strange acoustics means: if you play there as a DJ you're always puzzled by the sound of your monitor mixing up with echoes from the main P.A. that, of course delayed, hits back from the other side of the room which makes proper mixing quite uncomfortable and playing live not easier. Lars Lewerenz a.k.a. Das Audiolith was up for the warm-up set hammering several tracks from the recent "Doin' Our Thing" compilation amongst others, The Dance Inc. made changes in their tracklist for good and (ab)used me as their light jockey - sth. I haven't ever done before - , a job I continued to do while Juri Gagarin set the crowd on fire with a nice mixture of old and unreleased songs from their forthcoming album "Cobra". Right after starting my set someone from the club appeared asking about closing times, saying they had a contract running our party up to 2.00 a.m. while our scheduled said different. Due to that they hadn't announced the whole thing as club event but as concert only so a lot of people had left right after the live gigs, not knowing that there was more to come. Sad, but what can man do? Anyway - met a lot of nice ppl, my friend Mareike which I hadn't seen in years and her sister came by, Tina made the way from Erfurt (sorry for disappearing...) and a few ravers really into the sound we played. We're coming back.
Before hitting our hotel rooms the whole lot of us plus our driver Stina which is on the road with the DJ-team while the bands are on a car of their own - Säge's legendary "Cobra" - had like a little parking lot party in front of the hotel with local beer and a bottle of Tullamore Dew invlvd, but what happened there in detail is about to stay in the closet. Now of to sleep, refreshing for tonite's set.

eVade - The Robot [Super 6 Records 044.5]

Scheduled for september 24th via Super 6 Records is eVade's next outing named "The Robot", which is gambling around with vocal samples seemingly taken off an old sci-fi movie (... of the same name?) in variations versions but for some reasons shows quite a lack of inspiration. Sascha Müller's "I Am Your Master Mix" does the best job musically but still would've been better without the vocals that do not really fit tightly into any of the mixes provided.

Bielefeld BigUps...

Just a few words on yesterdays "Doin Our Thing" fest @ Bielefeld's Kamp - great fun and a massive audience, that means 600+ ppl on location. Although my midnite opening set on the basement floor wasn't that much attended as I hoped coze Egotronics live set, regarded as the main show of the night by many, was delayed and started parallel to mine it was nice to play a lot of 1990-93 Rave and UK Hardcore classics out to kids swinging in and out of the room continously, most of them of the same age as the records played out. Despite some technical difficulties with the bass speakers, freezing cold air in the basement and quite shitty monitors I managed to go through like about 2.5 hours and had good responses on tracks by the likes of 2 Bad Mice and SL2 - surprising as most of them youths seemed to be unaware of electronic music from that era.

I'm sure lots of reviews will be written on this event in the near future so there's no more words on details and backstage gossip here but it was good to see a big part of the Audiolith family united in one place. Big up to all kru, associated posse and of coze all staff - the likes of Saskia, Ece ("Saufen!"), Norbert, Jessi (doing a great job as night leader, not only for providing a bottle of whisky for a non beer drinker ;) ), the street team girls (good to meet you in person) and all others I've met throughout the fest and the morning after.

BTW - here's another feature story about our Audiolith fest...

JGarrett - Same Old Names [Super 6 Goodies 057]

New on Super 6 Goodies is JGarrett's "Same Old Names" which to be released as the labels cat.no. 057 these days. What's to be found on this one are three mixes of the main title providing variations of technoid music built around an incisive, Yello-esque vocal sample that makes this one quite individual but at the same time can be quite annoying when listened to too often. Not the strongest release ever put out via Super 6 Goodies.

C4 - Violator [Super 6 Goodies 056]

Forthcoming on Super 6 Goodies is Adam Crammond a.k.a. C4's "Violator" - a five track E.P. exploring a musical spectrum in between of DubTechno, some phonky Electro and classic, but still kind of abstract and experimental Techno sounds that surely would've been filed under the flag of "Intelligent Techno" throughout the 90s. A style that I've really digged back then and still do so there's no option but recommending this one.

Anja Huwe - NYC Exhibtion starting September 5th

Just a short announcement for all those readers not only in love with music art as well - which in some way perfectly come together at one specific point in here. The paintings of Anja Huwe will be shown @ the Governors Island Art Fair in New York City from September 5th onwards. Really impressive pieces, huge in size and providing good fun when one plays around with different angles and perspectives while looking at them - at some point one might even realise that the paintings look like colourful midget mountains. So make sure to drop by if you happen to be in NYC.

For those no familiar with Anjas work there's this video to check out what's the story - or at least a part of it - about her work.

"I paint music. I hear colour. My paintings can be heard with the eyes."

Born in Hamburg, Germany, Anja Huwe works globally — in Hamburg, New York and Great Britain organically fusing her creative careers in painting, music, film and writing.

As iconic singer and front-woman of X Mal Deutschland, Anja had a significant impact on the avantgarde days of the European „new wave" and connected with some of the most influential underground scenes whilst touring metropolitan hotspots across.

A selection of Anja Huwe's works will be shown at GOVERNORS ISLAND ART FAIR by 4heads 0A SEPT 5 - 27, every weekend House 12 / H, Ground floor, New York City.

opening: sat. sept 5 - the artist will be present
