Rave Against 2009

Usually this site is not or rarely meant to give out event recommendations but what happens at Hamburg's Grüner Jäger on new years eve has gotta be mentioned as this is gonna be massive. Leading throughout the night are DJ Krink & Das Audiolith of Audiolith Records fame serving a nice blend of ElectroPunk and IndieRave whilst Frittenbude are about to play two live-sets which are not to be missed as those guys from Munich not only have released a great album under the name of "Nachtigall" a few weeks ago but can be regarded as best live performing act I've seen this year. Be early - it's gonna be jam-packed.

Märtini Brös. Interview

Actually this interview was done for Dublin-based internationally renowned dance music magazine M8 Magazine in late july 2008 when the Märtini Brös. released their ten years anniversary album "The MB Factor" but as some of you might have missed that one I decided to make it available online again.

THE MB FACTOR

It’s been a full decade now since Berlins famous DJ / production duo Cle and Mike Vamp, apart from their solo efforts known as Märtini Brös., unleashed their first collaborational 12“ on Steve Bug’s now defunct Raw Elements imprint and they’ve been far from being quiet since then. As they’re celebrating their first two digit anniversary with a stunning CD retrospective named „The MB Factor“ it was time for our guest writer baze.djunkiii of Germany’s www.nitestylez.de to get in touch with them to ask what that specific factor is all about.

First of all, congratulations not only on your thrilling CD release but also on your overall success and the ability to work as a collaborational duo throughout all these years. The story might have been told a thousand times before but please introduce the Märtini Brös to those who don’t know you from scratch – who are you, what has been the initial thought behind teaming up as a duo back in the days and how has that changed for you until now?

„Actually we started got to know each other in October 1997 during the work for a German director called Katherina Thalbach. They wanted a Mozart opera partly changed into electronic music. During that work we did a track called “Material Love” which had been released in the beginning of 1998 on Steve Bugs former label “Raw Elements”. Since then we are brothers in mind. In the nineties Cle was a resident DJ at E-Werk and Mike Vamp, who turned into House music later, was more into Drum’n’Bass and did regularly shows for „Oceanclub” on Radio One Berlin. Besides we knew each other from several backstage sessions.
Some people say that we are like in the TV-series “The Odd Couple”, which is actually one of the reasons why our monthly residency at watergate is called that way – and we developed a perfect partnership going through a lots of ups and downs (fyi: in the past long before techno that was called: rock`n´roll). Last year we started to do some little solo projects aside to get new inspiration and to refresh our team spirit.“

Talking „The MB Factor“ – as your sound has changed from more classic House influences in the very beginning via Tech-/ElectroHouse to darker arrangements like your „Tracks From The Lab“-series one thing that has always been a part of your work is the use of Pop-flirty vocals that makes your sound accessible to a non-clubbing audience. Do you regard song writing a basic ingredient of your success and how does that work out during the production process?

„The thing is that we are both DJs and musicians in one person. That really helps to build the tracks. We see songwriting as essential but we are also clubbers and we were always keen to get this bridge full of dancing people between a regular song and a dance track without getting “tacky”. Besides we won´t stop a good idea coming along during a production.“

One track that defo sticks out on your album stylewise is the outro „Der Weg (Restored)“ which seems to be paying respect to acts like Kraftwerk or other more 80s-based German acts like Rheingold or others that used to combine songwriting and electronic beats. How influential are those acts to your work and what is this specific track all about?

„Oh my god. We were raised with that music. That music fitted so well into the shapes of this country: new buildings, cars and autobahn – when we did the track “Der Weg” Germany experienced a kind of “Neue Deutsche Welle” revival. In our old studio we had a organ, I think a farfisa, with a rhythm box. I remember how Cle was sitting at that organ like an organist in church playing that song. I had to find an output to record that organ but could not really find one so we placed a microphone close to the speaker. Sometimes you make tracks which reflect the actual situation. In the new version we replaced that organ with a synth bass. It is a piece of MB history but also a tribute to those german bands you mentioned.“

Listening to the full length CD of „The MB Factor“ the fan and homelistener will enjoy the fact that all tracks, classics as well as six new ones exclusively produced for this album which will be available as 2x12“ vinyl, are seamlessly mixed so one feels like on a trip through the Märtin Brös. universe. What was the basic idea behind that instead of doing a track-by-track retrospective album?

„It’s summer and we wanted to release a CD which people can listen to during their trips to whereever. On the other side we had a couple of new songs but thought the time is right to combine them with our favourite tracks from the past. Technology made it possible. We were a little insecure if that works out the way we wanted to have it. We put all our Maertini Broes spirit and experience into it with the aim to make it sound as timeless as possible.“

You celebrated the release of „The MB Factor“ on the centre stage of Dortmund’s Love Parade 2008 with a very special live performance – please tell us about what you did there and how the crowd reacted on this quite unusual way of playing live?

„We invited our friend and classic director Jan Tilmann-Schade to arrange the outro of “Biggest Fan” and did an exclusive version of “Flash” just with a beatbox, strings and vocals. It was a wonderful stunning experience. As the audience was so big it would’ve been good to flash the word “LIVE” on the LED screens. People at the Love Parade are used to get “music out of cans” because nobody wants to take the risk to perform live. Now we are proud that we had the guts to do it live.
We had a very good response although it was very unusual.“

Can we expect more things like this – a bit of stepping back from the usual club circuit and crossing borders towards other ways of performance or other art forms? Rumours are telling about plans for a film project...

„We will def continue our work with Jan Tilmann-Schade as he knows how to link these two worlds. Most of the people who come from that section give a shit about us as they see electronic music in general more as a “simple toy”. We believe that the next step will come. Film projects? That´s possible, may be …“

Last question for all who have been thinking about this for ages – what does the name of „Märtini Brös.“ mean?

„[mike vamp] Mix it good – chill but don´t shake.“

Theatre Cureosh [Pharmacom Records 046]

Pharmacom Records recently released their cat.no. 046 going by the name of "Theatre Cureosh". Produced by Jens Siewert six tracks are to be found on this piece, exploring a musical range from deep, hypnotic Trance to Ambient and string-loaden Electronica. In the mid 90's would've played those tracks out in the early morning hours when the sun rises and only a smaller crowd is drifting, floating, dancing and dreaming away to slow, pumping rhythms and nice sounds. The big chill.

Kanye West - Heartless [Roc-A-Fella Records]

Put on the promo circuit these days via Roc-A-Fella Records is "Heartless", the new single coming straight out of Kanye West's studios, ready to please all DigiSoul lovers out there on the street with fat 808-driven beats and the usual vocoderized choruses that are to be file as his trademark these days. If u've been lovin' Lil' Wayne's "Lollipop" u're about to love this one, too, as these are tracks of the same kind.

JGarret - Party Store E.P. [Säurebad Records 011]

Säurebad Records is back with its cat.no. 011 which is JGarret's "Party Store E.P." , a three tracker coming up with three raw wildpitch Acid tunes representing this genre at its best. Pure hypnosis for primetime abuse.

Blaktronics - Robo Bop / The Edge [Rubaiyat]

All those who love to hunt down extremely rare releases are recommended to watch out for the forthcoming Blaktronics 7" on Rubaiyat, which is not only limited to 150 copies worldwide but also features an individual, unique street art style artwork by Robotermark on each sleeve. These are the facts for collectors but let's talk music now. Whilst "Robo Bop" explores the musical area between Detroit-influenced Downtempo, Electronica and Experimental Electro - remember labels like the long gone 800Trak here - "The Edge" on the flip side will be loved by all those who really dig the sound of labels like Anticon. with their deep, foggy Downtempo and / or Advanced Instrumental HipHop-attitude. Defo a nice one.

Timeblind [Version 001]

Upcoming in february 2009 is cat.no. 001 of the new german Dubstep-imprint Version produced by Timeblind which clearly focuses on more experimental vibes to be found somewhere in between Dubstep and Electronica. All three tracks are obviously not made for primetime use , although "Backwardation" might work well with a bubbling crowd due to its more technoid vibe, but throughout a late night session or a warm up they'll find their place in a set.

Nox - For The Purpose Of Such Provisions [Pharmacom Records 045]

Cat.no. 045 of Pharmacom Records is Nox' new four track E.P. "For The Purpose Of Such Provisions" which provides dry, experimental but still dancefloor-fitting sound for the advanced posse. Producers like Lassigue Bendthaus or Speedy J come to mind as well as labels like KK Records, Anodyne, Mercuro Chrome or Detroit Underground whilst listening to this abstract workouts that are not essential quite good anyway.

Jazzanova feat. Ben Westbeech - I Can See [Sonar Kollektive]

Quite fresh is the latest 12" output from the Jazzanova camp seeing Brownswood's vocal impresario Ben Westbeech on microphone duties. As one might expect both the Original as well as the Instrumental versions are quite epic and for the Phusion / Broken Beats-posse but for god's sake we've got Holy Ghost! and Mark E doing reworks for a broader dancefloor massive. Whilst Holy Ghost! refers to the Disco era with typical string arrangements and a tribal'esque, percussive ending Mark E comes up with a stripped down version for advanced DeepHouse floors, bringing deep hypnosis and a cool as fuck dancefloor vibe. His remix is defo the best version featured on this 12" and defo the one that will be driving all decent floors mad. Nice.

Sascha Müller - Analog Monsters [Super 6 Records 37.5]

New on Super 6 Records is Sascha Müller's ten track album "Analog Monsters" serving a raw and uncut mixture of unprocessed, unedited Techno and Acid that will be well appreciated by all those involved into this specific sound and movement since day dot as all tracks seem to be recorded in one go from analog machines without additional rework. Due to this there's a quite minimalistic approach to be found here, no more than four or five different tracks are in use at the same time and there's a total lack of extra FX like echoes, delays or such, which aren't missing in any way. This is what electronic dance music was all about before software production became widely accessible and affordable and I wonder if there's more ppl missing that apart from me. Good album.

Rosenstolz - Wie Weit Ist Vorbei RMXs [Universal Music]

Out on the promo circuit since today is a fresh pack of remixes accompanying the recent Rosenstolz single "Wie Weit Ist Vorbei". This time we've got Kurd Maverick, Erix and Michael Mind on remix duties, delivering more melodic, ElectroHouse-flavored versions than Marc Romboy did a few weeks ago. Although this mixes might appeal to a broader audience than the first remix single and be played in big room discotheques Mr. Romboy's version was the better one anyway.

C 4 - Moon / Drift [Chillzone Records 008]

Cat.no. 008 on Chillzone Records is C 4's two tracker "Moon / Drift", a nice one which can be clearly recommended to all lovers of decent Deep Listening Music. Whilst "Moon" comes strong as deep, Ibiza-influenced Downtempo tune that'd easily fit on any Cafe Del Mar-compilation, "Drift" can be filed under the flag of classic Ambient with no beats but flickering, always modulating sounds causing a deep hypnosis and calm mood. If u're about to play on any Ambient-/ChillOut-floor these tunes should be in yr box.

Stromer & Miro - Wollemema [Super 6 Records 036]

Recently sitting in my P.O. box was Stromer & Miro's new release "Wollemema", put on the circuit via the extremely lively Super 6 Records. Musicwise their release can be filed as pumpin' club-orientated House, a bit of HardBag-flava is included as well but what sticks out most are the featured vocals that bring in a kind of Dada-istic, weirdo attitude that isn't everyones cup of tea but might brighten some faces when played out at the right time.

Abel Okugawa - Dance Like A Speaker [Avon Sound Recordings]

All lovers of nice Downtempo, Indietronics and Leftfield HipHop inna Anticon.-style watch out as the Roseland-based producer Abel Okugawa recently released his new album "Dance Like A Speaker" via Avon Sound Recordings - a fifteen track longplayer jam-packed with foggy HipHop beats, dense, score'esque atmospheric instrumental tunes and a few vocal joints that'll be highly appreciated for sure. Crisp production and excellent mastering are understood, nice booklet artwork with special printing techniques comes on top, so this one is recommended to music and art connaisseurs the same.

Tiny Tempa - Tears [DL Records 001]

All R'n'G / Rhythm'n'Grime posse are about to love cat.no. 001 of DL Records, which is Tiny Tempa's "Tears". Side a sees the Burgaboy Remix setting Niche / Bassline floors on fire whilst Tinchy Stryder & Ironik are exploring the darker, heavier side of R'n'G on the flip alongside the Main Vocal Mix which might gain some major airplay as it approaches underground followers as well as Urban / Digisoul-lovers. Guess there's only a few copies available in Germany, so make sure to pick up this one.

Impfgebiet Tollwut - Seuchenherd C [Pharmacom Records]

Finally it's the time to review part C of Impfgebiet Tollwut's "Seuchenherd" series, released via Pharmacom Records not long ago. This time the duo delivers a bunch of thirteen tracks to be filed under the flag of Mutant Country / Desert Folk / Grungetronics - minimalistic, alienating and partly depressing and due to that loved by the dark heartened, melancholic creatures of the night. Plus the druggy types are about to love it, too.

Club Tikka! Volume 2 - compiled by Mellow [Muto]

Lounge Records sister label Muto recently released Volume 2 of their highly appreciated "Club Tikka!" compilation, which accompanies the stations of their neverending nation wide "Club Tikka!" clubtour as well as their limited 7" edition releases. Carefully selected by the labels head honcho DJ Mellow there are a bunch of 16 nice and sweet tunes to be found here, covering the the whole msuical spectrum of contemporary Soul, Funk, Freestyle, (Neo)Disco and Funky Breaks - all that what "Club Tikka!" stands for as an event series set up by music lovers for people of the same kind. Picking a few names we've Acid Jazz Records' very own Smoove representin', Lack Of Afro remixin', Wicked Lester gettin' wild and the Torpedo Boyz brockin' out - just to name a few. This one's nice and if you're an open minded Freestyle head you should defo consider to check this out. To be found in a quality store near you.

Rosenstolz - Wie Weit ISt Vorbei *Marc Romboy Remix [Universal Music]

This one appeared in my P.O. box on saturday and is another quite astounding release from the Rosenstolz camp, usually known for the cheesy and cheap Pop music. But now they've discovered club music wonderland and put out some high quality promo only releases on the circuit featuring remixes by established and higly reputated names throughout the last weeks. This time it's Marc Romboy on remix duty who manages to transform their tune "Wie Weit Ist Vorbei" into a hypnotic, slightly metallic peak time piece that only uses a few reshaped vocal snippets instead of focusing on any vocal hook. Nice one and to be loved by all the Minimal jocks out there.
