Byetone – Plastic Star [Raster Noton 081]

One of the most surprising releases these days is Byetone’s „Plastic Star“, recently put on the circuit as cat.no. 081 by the more experimental flavored Raster Noton-imprint. But instead of another records that relies on pure experimentation, Byetone’s not bothered and puts out a dancefloor destroying tune that’s funky as hell. Imagine a mixture of Pan Sonic’s sound aesthetics, Electro-flavored phunk by the likes of Phonok or the great Marco Passarani – yes, we still love „I House You“ – and the wide epic melancholy of what is named as (Neo)Trance these days... the result of this amalgamation of sounds is amazing and about to set dancefloors on fire within seconds. Three great remixes are provided by Sleeparchive, Alva Noto who deliver another abstract phunk bomb and Dr. Walker which all hit the spot right and I hope I’m not proved wrong when I reckon this one’s gonna be one of the top selling Raster Noton-releases ever. Future classic.

Cle – Nomads [Poker Flat Recordings 094 Promo]

Steve Bug’s [Poker Flat Recordings-imprint comes up with another hot shot straight of the berlin-based studio of DJ Cle, who lately teamed up with Mr. Bug himself for the well appreciated „Silicon Ballet“ E.P. . His solo effort „Nomad“ for sure sticks to what the labels typical interpretation of the hip Minimal genre is – basic reduction and a bit of jacking funk. The title track – which is also remixed by Matthias Tanzmann on the flipside - adds a sweet seductive oldskool piano chord to this formula as well as little uplifting hook that keeps a smile on those faces on the floor, whilst „Water“ goes a bit deeper and darker and is best played past 4 a.m. in the morning when the crowd is open for a kind of moody vibe.

Mojo Club presents Rogue Soul [Edel Records]

If you plan to add only one Drum'n'Bass album to your collection this month, then "Mojo Club presents Rogue Soul" has to be the one of choice, recently released on full-length CD format via german semi-major imprint Edel Records. Hardly enough you see a non-indie label dealing proper underground club music these days, but as this first collaborational album of Michael "Electric Mojo" Sauer and Roland "Syncopix" Bogdahn - both of them have been around in the Drum'n'Bass circuit for ages and earned credits for their solo efforts, mostly fighting under the flag of what is named as Liquid or Soulful Drum'n'Bass - is not only a collection of tracks but a perfectly crafted longplayer that seems to have the potential to not only aim at the regular punter in the clubs but as well at those who enjoy their bit of homelistening from time to time it all makes sense as Edel has the promotional powers to get this one all over the place. Talking music Rogue Soul describe their very own sound as Breakbeat Soul which well fits as you've got proper Drum'n'Bass songs featuring vocalists as Kemo, Ghee Ruben and Luxyca on microphone duties, instrumentals, a track like "Axis Evel" that'll be well appreciated by day one junglists for the obvious reason and in the end a quite progressive, border-breaking piano half-time lick named "Sticky" that'll be loved by all those who stick with the Dubwise science of Amit and the likes of although it works on a different level musically. Defo one of the best albums this year has seen so far, not only when it comes to Drum'n'Bass but electronic dance music in general. Recommended.

Amy Winehouse – Back To Black [Universal Records]

Our favorite drama- / drug-queen Amy Winehouse is back – although there were rumours that her record company is about to ice her career for a while – with new 12“ that goes under the name of „Back To Black“. Once again based upon that well-known formula of vintage influences, enough pathetic drama when it comes to instrumentation and heartbreaking vocals as well this seems to be a bit of maths but still is high above average quality standards in its original version as well in the Mushtaq Vocal Remix that goes out to all Freestyle-jocks. Talking the flip – which is the A-side here – there’s Steve Mac on remix duties who provides two proper ElectroHouse’ish re-rubs that perfectly merge dancefloor functionality andAmy’s unique voice – full dancefloor impact is taken for granted.

Kenna – Say Goodbye To Love [Promo]

Kenna – who the f*ck is Kenna? Ethiopia-born, Chad Hugo-produced, supporting Mark Ronson in the UK and Zoot Woman in Germany, his second album „Make Sure They See My Face“ to hit the stores on April 11th whilst his new single „Say Goodbye To Love“ is scheduled for March 28th and now out on promo. There’s a load of influences to be found – his voice is not far away from The Cure, the funk might appeal to those who love Prince / Symbol and a tiny bit of PostPunk-ish thing might to be found here, too. But the best mix by far is the ElectroHouse-rework on B1 that’ll hit the spot right away in more commercial venues although it is only an average piece of art.

Broken Note – Dubversion / Mortal Bass [RUFF 006]

Peace Off sister label RUFF continues working on their very own definition of heavy, Industrial-influenced Dubstep and with their sixth release they’ve come up not only with the darkest 12“ the label has unleashed to date but with two of the darkest, most frightening tunes that’ve ever found their way on vinyl since Dubstep was formed as a genre. Both, „Dubversion“ and „Mortal Bass“ have only one, clearly defined mission. Destroy, kill and terminate every piece of organic life to be found on the dancefloor with subtle agression and a metallic, sci-fi vibe that is only to be found far out there in the loneliest, most deserted corner of the universe. Precise and perfect as Sigourney Weaver’s counterpart in „Alien“. This is the future.

Gui Boratto & Martin Eyerer – The Island [Audiomatique 027 Promo]

Gui Boratto & Martin Eyerer – both well appreciated for their solo efforts on the international club and production circuit – have been teaming up for the first time ever to share studio time and now see their first release of their collaborational work via Audiomatique Recordings these days. Title track „The Island“ might be described as a mixture of melodic (Neo)Trance, Minimalism and a bit of Balearic vibe – a tune that needs huge spaces and special moments for sure, otherwise it won’t work that well as it probably could. So DJ’s please – don’t play this one to death until u know that the time is really right to get this one on the decks. „The Beach“ on the flip comes up with a more MinimalTechno-related approach instead and reveals a special kind of emotionally overwhelming melodic sweetness that works best in early morning hours. Defo the winning track on this 12“.

Duffy – Mercy [A&M Records / Polydor]

All listeners of Advanced Pop music will love Duffy’s new single „Mercy“ that’ll be on the shelves on March 3rd and is yet to be found on promo circuit as one-sided 7“ single. Hailed as one of the „10 acts to watch in 2008“ by british press – ok, yes they’re into all those hype things – her delivery is proper, to be described as mixture of 60s influences and contemporary sounds and will be well appreciated by the mainstream radio massive as well as by those punters hangin’ out on not that nerdy and original pressings only Soul-allnighters. Good one.

The World Domination – F**kmachine [Luscious Sounds 010 Promo]

If any tune these days can claim to sneak around the corner with a big ballsy attitude it’s The World Domination’s „F**kmachine“, the newest offshoot on Azzido Da BassLuscious Sounds-label. Remixed by Malente and Adam Sky this is a highly effective piece of ElectroHouse close to but luckily not crossing over towards New Rave that proclaims loud and with a proper bit of machisme: „I’m Not A Man I’m A Fuckmachine“. Fuck feminism and pc-faggots – this is the shit that works on the floor and even more when Adam Sky’s names his first remix the „Adam Sky Fat Kunt Mix“ and serves huge Rock-flavored Breaks and a sweet seductive melody that’ll work the BigBeat- and Breaks-crowd right. Excellent piece, so if u don’t get it start listening to Twee Pop again.

Melvin Sparks – If You Want My Love / Rogue Soul – Slow Down *7“ Edit [Edel]

Promotional Split-7“ to announce the parallel release of the compilation „Mojo Club presents Dancefloor Jazz Volume 13“ and the debut album of Rogue Soul the collaborational Drum’n’Bass-alias of Michael „Electric Mojo“ Sauer and Roland „Syncopix“ Bodgahn. As it goes side A features a nice’n’easy Dancefloor Jazz-tune from very back in the days which means 1975 here, whilst side B makes the crowd happy with a top piece of Dub-/ Reggae-influenced Drum’n’Bass. And to all those who doubt that this combination of different styles works out well – check out the regular „Original Jazz Rockers“ events @ Hamburg’s Mandarin Kasino and experience a massive brockin’ out on two floors to exactly this unique mixture.

Moonbootica w/ Jan Delay – Der Mond [Moonbootique 030]

Hamburg’s ElectroHouse-superstars finally unleash the most requested 12“ of their very own Moonbootique-imprint these days – the insomnambulist „Der Mond“ featuring singer Jan Delay, better known to Rap-fans as Jan Eißfeldt of Absolute Beginner-fame, on vocal duties. Although the tune is anthemic and sticks in ones ears immediately after the first contact, the main reason why everyone seems to be so keen on playing it out, it ain’t my cup of tea as it simply doesn’t get me by the balls neither in its Original Version nor remixed by Hey Today! and Dada Life.

Robert Owens - Night-Time Stories [Compost Records]

There are not many album's to be found these days that are making upfront waves as huge as Robert Owens' new longplayer "Night-Time Stories" , which is scheduled for release via Compost Records on february 22th. Interviews and cover stories in all important music magazines - at least in Germany - revealed his history to all those who are too young to know about this man who is one of the main voices and at least main influences that shaped House music from the very beginning, naming the year 1986 for his first vinyl release. Working with an endless list of collaboration partners has established Robert Owens as a major force within the past two decades and this concept works as well for his new album that features tracks produced by the likes of Ian Pooley, Atjazz, Kirk Degiorgio, TJ Kong & Nuno Dos Santos - last mentioned responsible for the most anthemic and ecstatic piece of music on the album - only to name a few plus one completely self-produced track. But for sure it is Mr. Owens special vocal delivery that shapes the music, no matter if the base is more Minimal flavored, a classic oldskool House vibe, DeepHouse or even an epic but abstract, string-loaden, 'troity vibe like Kirk Degiorgio's "No Tomorrow". Utterly flawless and one to stand the test of time.

Dubstep In Bulgaria

I don't know how big the scene is over there, but at least they run a special forum related to Grime / Dubstep culture. Nice one.

Shackleton feat. Tenfold Vengeance – Death Is Not Final [Skull Disco 009 Promo]

What a great piece of music! Shackleton steps back from the Dubstep / MythStep-vibe and unfolds a new, still mystical and ancient, style with this one. Based upon a slow, deep straight 4/4 bassdrum and multilayered natural percusssions „Death Is Not Final“ creates a damp, dangerous athmosphere and seems to be more score’esque than anything Shackleton ever released to date due to several vocal samples of indian or african (?) origin and dark soundscapes waving in and out as the tune progresses. Names like the mid nineties Technova or Loop Guru come to mind and if you know what we’re talking here you’re clearly recommended to check this one out. On the flip „Death Is Not Final“ is reworked by Berlin-based producer T++ which is associated with the Monolake- / Dynamo-camp. His remix transforms the tune into a nice piece of Electronica, takes away the 4/4 and comes up with what seems to be a half bar loop built of re-processed percussion sounds instead. This beat structures for sure is not easy and necessarily dancefloor fitting but anyhow a good one, so once again this Skull Disco-release has to be filed as a must have.

Santogold – Creator / L.E.S. Artistes [Lizard King Records]

Recently released on Lizard King Records is Santogolds new double A-side 12“ „Creator / L.E.S. Artistes“. „Creator“, which has been created alongside the likes of Switch and Freq Nasty, clearly aims at the bashment crowd stuck between the music of M.I.A., Ragga- / Dancehall-vibes and caribbean influences. Plus those who’ve been touched by Chemical Brothers massive tunes „Galvanize“ and „Rize Up“. On the flip „L.E.S. Artistes“ seems to deal with a more song-oriented attitude including melancholy and proper choruses and all that – a tune that goes out to the Pop / Mainstream massive but still has a bit of PostPunk-influence glimpsing round the corner.

Appleblim & Peverelist – Circling / Over Here [Skull Disco 008 Promo]

For sure one of the hottest, freshest and most upfront collabos in Dubstep and related styles these days is this attack of combined forces on the beloved Skull Disco-imprint. Whilst „Circling“ can be described as a piece of dry, techy, broken beats fused with Basic Channel’esque deepness and Pole-like, echoic offbeats that works advanced dancefloors – no matter if dedicated to Dubstep, Electronica or others – perfectly in the early morning hours, „Over Here“ comes up with an overwhelmingly beautiful, partly droney intro that in its intensity somehow reminds me of older, beatless Metamatics-records and progresses into restless, ever buidling but still halftempo Dubstep, once again accompanied by wallshaking basslines and processed, sorta bleepy offbeat sounds. Highly recommended and defo one that’ll stick in my box for ages.

Jennifer Rostock – Kopf Oder Zahl

On the promo circuit right now is Jennifer Rostock’s new 12“ „Kopf Oder Zahl“, which is a jumpy piece of German ElectroPunk vs. Pop-attitude surely meant to mash up any Indie floor due to it’s bleepy high voltage energy. The flipside sees former HipHop-heros and now Mayday proved Deichkind on remix duties transforming the whole track into a functional ElectroHouse-thingy that is to be called anthemic without a doubt. Check out.

Timbaland - Scream [Blackground Records / Interscope]

Taken off Timbaland's "Shock Value"-album is his new single "Scream" which features Keri Hilson and Nicole Scherzinger on vocal duties. Released via Blackground Records / Interscope this one is going out to all Pop crew and will gain massive airplay on mainstream stations. Beatwise all club DJ's might use that B1-instrumental for a bit of teasing, but for heavy club rotation there's too much DigiSoul'ish drama involved so the vocals are bit too sweet and candy for my personal taste. Defo not one of Timba's best works so far.

Rihanna - Shut Up And Drive [DefJam / Syndicated Rhythm Records]

Surprisingly Rock-flavored is Rihanna's new single "Shut Up And Drive" which has been put out on the promo circuit recently via DefJam / Syndicated Rhythm Records. Although this one will stick in the consumers ears for a while it's not as unnerving as here awful "Umbrella" which - for what reason ever - went Top10 in the last years revival polls of several german music magazines. But leaving the radio versions alone as the best thing about this 12" by far is the delivered rework by Eddie Craig and Jim Sullivan better known as The Wideboys, a quite commercial but still banging ElectroHouse version running for 6:36 minutes that is about to send all glitz crew mental. Speed that one up to +4 or 5 and I bet all Niche-lovers will get the point as well.
