Straight from the Ghetto - News on HipHop, pt. 26

One of the rare 100% sure shots to be found in todays major HipHop biz is delivered by Fabolous ft. Ne-Yo on Desert Storm Records / Def Jam as their new single "Make Me Better" features all ingredients to be an instant underground hit plus to gain major league airplay on heavy rotation. Beats are tight and minimal, epic strings are responsible for a melancholic urban athmosphere plus Ne-Yo serves his best work ever while singing the chorus starting out with the incredible line "I'm a movement for myself, but I'm force when we're together..." in a crooning DigiSoul-style pulls girls to the dancefloor as well as sticks in everyones ear for centuries. Seems to be the best HipHop/DigiSoul 12" released in 2007 so far and perfectly fits into Urban / Rhythm'n'Grime flavored sets as well. HUGE tune. Period.

Akon comes up with a new tune named "Mama Africa" on Universal Motown which seems to jump on a kind of positive, Sunshine Reggae-like bandwagon. Whilst the original, full vox version is too chart-flavored, cliche-fulfilling and cheesy the pure instrumental riddim is, although far from being underground or grass rooted, at least a nice one to be used as a tool from time to time.

Geffen Records just put a promotional 12" taken off Common's forthcoming album "Finding Forever" on promo circuit featuring the tracks "The People" and "The Game", both produced by Kanye West. Serving a laid back, old-skoolish vibe that might be flagged as Advanced HipHop compared to most releases these days both tunes are aiming straight at the dancefloor where they make all b-boys and breakers shake their bones on the ground going wild. How comes that tracks like these are so rare as this is a kind of HipHop that keeps it real without being into any gangsta bullshit at all but at the same time is accessible to non-purists from a musical side of things as they feature some jazzy samples and raw beats that'll be appreciated by any kind of Headz / Freestyle-DJ as well ?

Parts in the post, pt. 66

Kamikaze Records have recently released Sascha Müller's "Pump Up The Bass E.P.", an excellent three tracker showcasing the artists ability to deliver serious, simple and straightforward Techno music of a more classic kind and - at the same time - to avoid too formulaic layouts and sounds that have been heard for more than a decade right now, although there are references to be found, labels like Monoid, which has provided a more tribalistic form of what is known as ToolTechno and of course all the swedish producers who have been and still are paying respect to their loops.

Limited to 35 pieces only is at.no 020R of Supersix Records, which is Sascha Müller's "Cherry Bomb Remixes". This ultra-rare picture - !!! - 10" holds the Original Mix plus reworks by Bengala Boys, Das KNO and Flensburg-based DJ Nightnoise and covers a spectrum from slightly Trance-touched Electro-/TechHouse to straight Techno and will rarely be seen in any recordstore anywhere. Expect this one to be sold out even before this review is appearing on your screen.

Mannheim's finest Tilt Recordings have put promo copies of their forthcoming 7th release on the circuit these days, which - once again - will be filed as must have for all lovers of Techno-Drum'n'Bass. Side A holds an Amex & Kaiza rework of "Pitch The Nature" by the swedish Techno producer Johannes Ahlberg, a logical step forward in the labels' release politics as it transfers the aesthetics of so-called (Sweden)-/ ToolTechno into Drum'n'Bass more consequently than any other imprint does these days. On the flip Quadrant reworks Amex & Kaiza's uber-hit "Shrinz" and delivers the first ever remix of a non-label associated artist on Tilt. Both tunes are about to have a longer half-life than your average Drum'n'Bass-track released, mostly due to their tool'ish and non-drop or hit-orientated formula and character, which makes them stick out of the monthly bunch of releases - this goes especially for "Pitch The Nature" and it's uniquely galopping and hectically looped beats of a hard nature. Music for the headstrong.

Vincent Inc & Overflow are responsible for the "Walk E.P.", which is cat.no. 030 of Super Six Goodies, serving a bundle of four tracks stylewise to be filed under deep, quite ambient'ish Techno, defo touched by House-orientated grooves and kinda balearic vibes. Recommended to those who still feel the magik of Jaydee's alltime classic "Plastic Dreams" and the legendary compilation "Logic Trance".

All lovers of straight, hard egded Techno should check out Sascha Müller's new release, named "Lots Of Knobs E.P." out on Northbeatz Digital. As all tracks on this four piece are fast, heavy, partly distorted and tool'ish all tracks might be filed under the flag of HardTechno, formerly known as Schranz by many of this styles' followers although this is a term that never existed as a definition for a musical genre. In yer face...

"Stop, Silence" is the title of E-Sound's first release on Super Six Goodies, the labels thirtyfirst release which takes us on a journey back in time, back to the mid-90s, when House was still pumpin' , dreamy and slightly Acid-flavored with some hypnotic 303-lines spiralling into nowhere. Call it retro, call it Hardbag, call it whatever - play that out loud and the dancefloor reaction will prove that the artist is right.

Longplay love 51.0

AvantRock outfit Tomahawk are about to release their third longplay album under the name of "Anonymous" via Ipecac on june 22nd, fusing down-to-earth Southern Rock and vocals consisting of highly intense, translated native american chants. Those - often taken out of an religious, ceremonial or war-related context - are energetic, hypnotic even due to their repetitive character and, although accompanied by recent music of todays taste, still do not lose their ancient fascination and character, transforming the whole length listening experience into a connection to long lost rituals, forgotten strengths and myths leading back to the beginning of time, without exploring the so-called field of "New Age" or "World Music". Very fascinating indeed and recommended for a check in yr local records tore.

Tim Holland, better known as Sole to many, sees the release of his album "Poly.sci. 187" under his other moniker Mansbestfriend via Anticon. in mid-june. Serving 16 sketch of a length variety between 0:52 and 4:09 minutes the album explores the genres of Instrumental Leftfield HipHop, No-Field Electronics and foggy Electronica, which sometimes seems to refer to the likes of Boards Of Canada. Shattered beats and harmonies are to be found as well as more ambient'ish structures, so the listening experience delivered is a quite diversified one although not outstanding. A good one for those still meant to discover Electronica as a genre as such but those who are experienced might find better, more thrilling albums to add to their personal collection.

Aerotrio are about to release their new, self-titled album as cat.no. 031 of Pharmacom Records, a collection of at least 10 tracks to be filed under the flag of (Nu)Jazz with a touch a of easy brazilian flava. Well fitting for so-called lounge environments and classy hotel bars it might be that Aerotrio do not touch the heart of the average electronic music lover, but those who do appreciate a piece of calm & relaxed athmosphere will undoubtedly be up for their sound.
