Straight from the Ghetto - News on HipHop, pt. 25

50 Cent has a new single scheduled on Eminem's very own Shady Records-imprint under the name of "Straight To The Bank", taken from his forthcoming album to be released on June 19th. Beats are on an average standard and lyrics about how much dough he's got are getting a bit boring recently. New ideas, please.

Hamburgs Temmyton sees the release of her debut-album "Komma aufn Punkt" , which is afaik the first ever HipHop album coming from a Hamburg-based female rapper, via Schmuf Hamburg on 9th of june, serving 20 tunes ranging from massive party bangers like "Ich Komm Zu Dir" to NeoSoul-flavored ballads like "Ballad". Most of them beats, either HipHop-like or Reggae-/Dancehall-flavored, are provided by her labelmate Bo Flower which as well is featured as guest vocalist on three songs - further artists featured are Sleepwalker, Siafa, Selma Montana amongst others - on which Temmyton spits & sings lyrics with ingredients covering biz chat, love and a whole lot of social criticism and political statements, but avoids - unlike many contemporary HipHop-artists - any kind of beef neither she fronts any other rapper. In spite of this she spreads 100% positive vibrations with her absolute self consciousness, fixed on CD and even more when live on stage. Check out the album snippet on myspace and make sure to attend one of Temmy's shows throughout Germany, even if u're not a native speaker you'll get her for sure...

Prayce's "Feel Good" is now available on promo circuit via Zeitgeist / Universal in it's Original Extended Version plus remixes by the Vibekingz, apart from the remix 12" we reviewed not that long ago. No doubt that this one is about to pull the ladies on the dancefloor in more commercial R'n'B-/DigiSoul- or what they call BlackMusic-like - at least in Germany they do that - places due to its ultra-positive attitude and booming 808-drums this might also get some major radio airplay as well. If you're into the most underground stuff around keep yr hands off this one, but if you can stand a bit of cheese & happiness you might well get the point of what "Feel Good" - mind the name - is all about.

Parts in the post, pt. 64

Former mp3-only imprint Shadybrain have put out promos of their forthcoming second 12"-release shortly, which is about to feature Axiom & Optiv as main artists. A-side sees the pair of two teaming up for "Unforeseen" , a dark, techy, bassline grinding Drum'n'Bass-tune serving that specific kind of un-pleasure the primetime posse needs. Axiom's solo work "Alter Ego" starts out with a short, kinda spooky vox-intro and progresses into a bit of oldskool'ish TechFunk later, paying respect to the heyday of "Wormhole" without sounding dated. This is a proper update of what technoid Drum'n'Bass is - or at least should be - about in 2007, so just check this one out.

Giles Smith and Martin Dawson teamed up lately for their project Two Armadillos which sees release of its first 12" "Tunnel Of Light E.P." as cat.no. 069 of Dessous Recordings soon. Three tracks to be found here, dancing on the border of the deeper shades of House and minimalistic Techno, pleasing lovers of both genres and adding a warmer, more organic touch to the music. Especially the title track "Tunnel Of Light" sort of reminds me of the legendary CD-compilation "Richie Hawtin & John Acquaviva present X-Mix-3 - Enter: Digital Reality!", which set new standards in upfront minimalistic dance music - or: Intelligent Techno if u like that term - in 1994.

Looking for some (P-)Funk-influenced Indie/Electro and vice versa partybangers with a whole lot of humour? Then check out Knarf Rellöm Trinity's latest output on Ritchie Records named "Move Your Ass & Your Mind Will Follow" featuring at least four tunes - plus two interludes - that are about to rock any NeuRave-/Nerd-/Weirdo-dancefloor gathering with their bulky beats, cumbrous funk and anarchic do-it-yourself attitude. Not recommended for those who like to pigeonhole every- and anything , but those preferring to get wasted instead and have nice time should ask their local dealer to stock this E.P.

Monday night episodes

Two lil' weirdo episodes which happened last monday night, when I was doing my regular "Urban!zm" show at Hamburg's Meaniebar focusing on the Grime- / Dubstep-/ Sublow-side of life...

The night was still young and the doors just opened when a more Rock-type of guy entered the bar, planning to attend a concert at the Molotow located right underneath Meaniebar which was scheduled for tuesday instead of monday. Anyway, the geezer decided to stay, sipped on his beer and was going like

"What kind of music do you play right now?"
"Well, errm, Sublow"
"Sub... what?"
"Sublow"
"Well u know, I'm an old geezer into like Rock music, so I don't know nothing about electronics. But I like Drum'n'Bass & Jungle. 'eard that on the radio a few ago and I did like the kind of energy served by that sound. There was a DJ on going by the name of baze.djunkiii...."
"Well, actually this happens to be me..."
"Woah!"

That guy was as impressed as I was surprised, stayed in for the whole night until we closed and behaved really polite, talkin', takin' photos and all that although he was really drunk later on. Cool thing though, guess he's coming back someday. And well, it is kinda special if someone you never seen before and that's coming in by chance tells that you've been the one introducing him to that specific kind of music.


Shortly after we closed me and my bartender Steve, a long time nightlife compagnon from the mid-90's heyday of Techno and Rave, did the usual run for a bit of crap food at the local Burger King at the infamous Reeperbahn / St. Pauli area when another geezer, apparently a native english speaker, went like

"Hey, you got a Neurosis sticker on your record box"
"Yes..."
"Well, we're on the same label.."
"Hm..."
"We've just been playing at Markthalle. We're..." ,showing his backstage pass with the band's name on it, "... Dying Fetus. Do you know the name?"
"Sure I've lately been writing a review on your new album..."

He was like a bit of bemazed and so were I, not by the fact that we met anyway as music business & industry are like that but by the way how that happened and where. I mean, it's been fuckin' Burger King on a monday night at like 2 a.m. Not a place where musicians of that different genres come together for a gathering... do they?

Grime r_port vol. 18

It's been a while since Team Shadetek released their last vinyl but now they're are back, hitting Grime dancefloors harder than ever with their new 10" on Sound Ink Records. On the A-side we've got the heavy metallic "Reign Riddim" featuring Skepta on top of a bleepy 8bit-sounding hook, B-Side sees Jammer's voice complaining on "Master Your Flow" about too many men ringing his celly for advice or help in business plus the cuts bassline-complex instrumental named "Skynet Riddim". Defo a sick 10" which is one to get straight away from yr local record shop.

New label Takeover Entertainment have released their first 12" lately, which is Tinchy Stryder's double-A-side "Break Away / Not Like Me". Whilst "Break Away" is a massive R'n'G / Rhythm'n'Grime-tune which is about to mash up underground floors as being aired on commercial radio, fusing sweet R'n'B-flavas and ruff street lyrics, "Not Like Me" is on a typical Stryder-like Grime tip featuring his characteristic doublings and flows he's appreciated for out on the street. Must have for all tru Grimeists out there.

A.K.M.D. a.k.a Alleykat Man Dem have put out their first 12" named "Ganjaman & Pitchblakk present Tha Official E.P." on their own imprint this week. Four dark & grimy riddim instrumentals featured here which seem to be influenced by an amalgamation of stakkato aesthetics brought to the floor by the likes of Ruff Sqwad as well as the darker halfstep stuff with sawtooth basslines on Slimzos Productions. A proper one which is about to stick in Grimeists record boxes like glue.

Parts in the post, pt. 63

Christoph Götsch, better known as Malente to the dancefloor massive, comes up wit a new 12" under his MANROX-moniker on Luscious Sounds named "tHIS MANROX" these days. Hyper-functional for primetime sets the two versions of title track plus the additional "sP€ND uR cA$H" are to be filed under the flag of the "louder" kind of ElectroHouse which is quite popular amongst the likes of Boyz Noise, Eric Prydz, Digitalism and others these days and will be appreciated by many punters for sure when hammered through a huge PA system.

D'julz' "Runny" is the forthcoming cat.no. 085 of Poker Flat Recordings, a more tool'ish, long time building tune with a kind of psychedelic feel to it that either is good for paving the way for another ultra-slamming track to follow within the next mix or just to keep the late nite crowd moving. It's rarely seen that Poker Flat puts out something like this, something that ain't kind of anthemic, recognizable or at least jackin' but as long as there's a certain high quality standard delivered nothing wrong with that anyway. Berkson & What's rework of "Runny" takes things to a warmer, more organic, housier and as well catchier level, using some well-known stab sounds that add a bit of extra drive to the whole tune - will be played out more often than the original version. B2-track "Sign" seems to be big time influenced by Cologne's mid-90s experiments in reduction and minimalism delivered by artists like Mike Ink - remember his great "Telefon"-remixes for Andreas Dorau ??? - and to have transfered this attitude to a thrillling 2k7 level. Rate "Sign" as number one out of three tunes delivered on this 12".

Up for something more cheesy and anthemic? Then check out Prayce's new single "Feel Good" put on promo circuit via Zeitgeist / Universal these days, which delivers a mixture of Filter-/Disco-House and Umek's Astrodisco-ingredients for suburban candy ravers and commercial floors. Not to be taken too serious but this one guarantees a moronic grin on everybodys face and makes sure that them are punters are 'avin it when they're E'd up. Can't help lovin' it for this FX, same goes for some ultra-cheesy Happy Hardcore.

Longplay love 50.0

Ipecac are about to release "Lickers Last Leg" , their 86th release btw, on june 1st, which is the new album of Goon Moon. Expect a twelve titles and 54 minutes long journey to the wonderful mixture of leftfield'ish Pop, Psychedelia and earth bound Southern-flavored Rock music, brought to you by the bunch of Jeordie White, Chriss Goss and guest appearing artists like Zach Hill, Josh Freese, Whitey Kirst and others. Starting the album with the best song - "Apple Pie", a deep melancholia driven ballad that'll be on my personal toplist for this years autumn - might not be called the cleverest manouevre but as the following songs are somewhat between solid and good that does not do as much harm as it could have done otherwise.

Brendon Whitney a.k.a. Alias sees the release of his first ever remix collection album on may 25th, which is to be put out under the simple name of "The Collected Remixes" via Anticon. Featuring anthemic works as his great redo of John Vanderslice's "Exodus Damage" - huge sing-a-long chorus "Dance, Dance, Revolution!" included here - and more reworks for the likes of Lali Puna, Christ., Sixtoo and lesser known acts like Boy In Static and Lucky Pierre amongst others this great album once showcases Alias' ability to fuse cloudy, abstract instrumental HipHop-beats with Electronica'esque sounds, slices of (Anti-)Folk, Leftfield'ish Pop and his own personal note that makes his productions that recognizable from their first bars. As most of the remixes previously have been available on vinyl only, this collection is essential for all non-vinyl-addicted lovers of Alias' music and recommended to all others as well. U need this.

Offshore Recordings, our favorite label for Advanced-/ Intelligent-/ Leftfield-/ Abstract-/ whatever- type of nonconforming Drum'n'Bass proudly presents its first CD-formatted various artists compilation named "Buried Treasure" these days featuring highly appreciated artists like ASC, Martsman, Fanu, Sileni amongst others on remix and production duties. As one might already guess from the names dropped all ten tracks are not standardised DJ fodder for your average rave floor as there's no clowning or drop focusing involved here, but function well for advanced and experienced crowds throughout a proper clubnight which takes care of the whole spectrum of Drum'n'Bass, especially the deeper end which is sometimes named Choppage / Beardage / Edits as pseudonyms for a special kind of beat - or better: breakbeat - science. If u're not the vinyl type of guy and about to cop only one Drum'n'Bass-CD this month "Buried Treasure Vol. 1" is to be filed as essential.

Parts in the post, pt. 62

Available on promotional CD-R only - at least at the day this review is written - is part 2 of Koolture's recent release "Heart (The Remixes)", including another bunch of seven additional remixes by the likes of Tecnoman SF, Ladies On Mars, Sgoliat as well as the original album version of this tune. As the reworks featured on part 1 all served mixes cover the field between genres like Trance, proggy TechHouse and SynthPop and are about to work discotheques as well as more underground venues right.

Parallel to its original version Sound Of Urban / Universal Records have put out a remix edition 12" of David Vendetta's recent single "Love To Love You Baby" featuring four reworks by artists like Julien Merros, R-Slane, Yann Kriss and Louis Botella. All of them deliver proper functional works for floors that are not necessarily bound to the "underground" attribute but still on a - lets say - TechHouse-tip that's slightly touched by mainstream flavors. Not to be filed under the flag of "classic" or "essential" but a good tool anyway - if you need one.

Production duo Trolle Siebenhaar sees their new 12" put on the circuit by the danish label Boom! Records and remixed by well-known names as there are Groove Rebels, Oliver Koletzki, Martin Buttrich and the Fat Tony Crew. As one might already learn from the remixers names the reworks are stuck somewhere between deeper shades of what's named Minimal these days and genres like ElectroHouse / TechHouse, working the dancefloor crowd properly and - due to Ane Trolle's incinsive vocals - will be quickly recognised and well appreciated by punters as well as jocks. Gonna stick in DJ's cases a bit longer than yr average promo vinyl, so watch out for this one.

Parts in the post, pt. 61

Sascha Müller's 3 tracker "Haus Of House" is cat.no. 028 of Super Six Goodies, which perfectly proves the floor-functional power of pumping, tribal-influenced House music. If you're looking for complex structures and so-called "intelligent" micro-displacements keep away from this and on looking for further KetamineHouse from the Villalobos-posse, but if you happen to be a real club kid in need of some proper energy flash grab that.

David Vendetta's new single "Love To Love You Baby" has been put on promo circuit via Sound Of Urban / Universal Records recently and is about to match well with all jocks focusing on a mainstream-flavored mixture of TechHouse / ElectroHouse slightly touched by the sound of minimalism - promoted by the likes of Tiefschwarz and others these days. Probably a nice tool on the floor, but seen as a whole only an average release with a tempo-changing breakdown and some positve, well-recognisable hookline, which partly seems to be stolen from one of Donnacha Costello's Minimise-12" out of 2004.

Freeform Five's "No More Conversations" is about to be released via Hed Kandi soon featuring remixes by Mylo, Fedde Le Grand, Switch and Mason, all on a well-functional ElectroHouse tip for more mainstream-orientated dancefloors. Not what I prefer to play out when it comes to personal taste, but I can't deny that the crowd starts to brock out whenever this one hits the decks.
