Straight from the Ghetto - News on HipHop, pt. 24

"Pressure", the new 12" of Belly feat. Ginuwine has been put out on promo by CP Records not so long ago and is to be filed under kitsch-loaden HipHop vs. DigiSoul that'll make it on mainstream radio for sure but is a bit too Pop when it comes to my personal taste. On the flip we've got "Stomp On 'Em" which is the better shot due to to a rough, electroid synth-melody backing the tune but still the tracks remains on an average level and does not stick out of the loads of tunes released each week.

Akon's next single "Don't Matter", taken from his latest album named "Konvict", has seen promo release on Universal Motown lately and it seems like he is about to fuse DigiSoul and laid back (Sunhine)Reggae with this tune that is only meant to touch the hearts of underage girls fallen for their classmate for the first time. So forget the vocal version and stick to the instrumental cut if you're a serious jock and not necissarily playing teenage birthday parties. "Shake Down" on the flip does better here, coze it's more anthemic but in the end of the day will end up with a short half-life and won't stick in DJ's cases for a long time.

Promotional copies of Rihanna's new 12" "Umbrella" featuring Jay-Z have been released by Syndicate Rhythm / DefJam this week which proves that Rihanna aims for nothing less than major RadioPop business leaving her individual DigiSoul / R'n'B-approach behind and tends to step into songwriting instead. Nothing wrong with that but defo not my cup of tea anymore...

Parts in the post, pt. 60

All lovers of classic Trance as well as fans of the Pet Shop Boys should try to get hold of a copy of Koolture's forthcoming single "Hearts", which flew in straight to our postbox from Argentinia recently. To be released on Eternal Sunday Records the CDM serves at least 10 - sic! - reworks by remixers like Sgoliat, Rome-based Sygma, Tecnoman SF and others, covering a musical spectrum from Trance via Progressive / Tribal House to SynthPop-influenced EuroDance, all well-produced and - due to the included Pet Shop Boys vocals - quite catchy, which means that they'll work well on mainstream-influenced dancefloors but also add a bit of extra spice to more underground flavored partys.

Tim Fiedler's "Mental Disorder" is cat.no. 027 of Supersix Goodies , including three versions of the track "Take Your Pill", which - in its original version - combines mid-90's ClubHouse grooves and proper up-to-date minimalism whilst the remix by Nightnoise takes the whole thing to a harder, more technoid level and Sascha Müller's rework is on a mental psychedelic AcidTrance-tip.

Sascha Müller is as well responsible for cat.no. 002 of Säurebad Records, which is his "Acid Junkfood E.P." - a two tracker holding the tracks "Acid Junkfood Pt.1" & "Acid Junkfood Pt.2", both paying respect to pure, jacking and 100% analogue Acid music. Timeless, and highly functional, stuff that'll rock dancefloors now and in future times as there's and will be nothing better than raw drum programming accompanied by bubbling, ever changing 303-lines when it comes to 4-2-the-floor based electronic dance music. Especially "Acid Junkfood Pt.2" sounds like it has been taken from Chicago's long lost archives and is a must have for sure.

Hamburg based label Sunday Service have released Finn.'s "The Nays Will Have It" these days, a six track remix vinyl of his last album entitled "The Eyes Will Have It" accompanied by - at least the full release is - an 18 track bonus CD featuring even more reworks which is not included with the whitelabel that doesn't hold any additional info on remixers and producers. Anyway, as far as one can say it is a typical release for Sunday Service - stuck in the no man's land between fragile Singer / Songwriter IndiePop, foggy Electronica and the club's marching 4-2-the-floor dancefloor. Thus being in between aesthetics function as a kind of trademark for those who followed and loved the labels back catalogue since day one, but still make it difficult for either reviewers and retailers to fully recommend to or dissuade from purchasing their releases or - even worse - find a good place to store their releases in the shops shelves.

May 7th sees the release of Alphacut Records' cat.no. 006, a triple-split 12" of MZE, Martsman and Nalpas. A1 sees MZE calling for "Blut", which is - once again - a massive rave stomper on the more chopped up side of Drum'n'Bass. Fat stabs and oldskool'ish rave sounds plus a dark vocal sample are responsible for a serious brockout on the dancefloor, even though the beats are tricky and it takes a bit until one is able to ride the groove properly. Nalpas short'ish tunes "OE Part 1" and "OE Part 2" can be seen as additional experiments in fusing Film Noir'esque athmospheres and fucked up Drill'n'Bass / Jungle instead, whilst Martsman's "Jump Funk" is - as the tunes name already suggests - a tight mixture of serious Drumfunk/Choppage business and Aphrodite's wobbly bassline of back in the days JumpUp tunes.

As well scheduled for May is cat.no. 026 of Breakbeat Science by Mutt, who's serving his tunes "Advance Money" and "Training Suite" here. First named is an easy Jungle-flavored tunes based upon a classic breakbeat and a laidback riff that seems to have an almost balearic touch on it - defo recommended to all those addicted to Jungle / Drum'n'Bass since day one. "Training Suite" is ultra-minimalistic instead starting with a Dancehall-like bassdrum figure providing a kind of anti funk-groove when the first snares appear. But after a short break everythings in order again, the two steppy beats seem on a jumpy tip and the bassline floats like it has been recorded under water on a soft and easy summers day. De facto a release that stands far out of the average bulk of Drum'n'Bass 12" delivered to yr local shop these days, so cop that if yr looking for something special.

April 27th sees the release of "Inside The Difference Engine", which is the new album of End Of Level Boss, scheduled on the infamous Exile On Mainstream-imprint. Stuck between Metal, melodic Hardcore and Stoner-/Psychedelic-influences plus a bit of Street-/SkateMetal as well the band provides a massive, heavy bunch of 8 tracks here which undoubtedly sound unique with their nerve shuttering, grinding riffs that do perfectly fit to situations when one goes through his darkest hours - lonely, alienated, sad and stone cold, a world collapsing. If it'd be autumn right now the term "suicidal" would be a perfect description. Purchase.

Phonique's new album "Good Idea" is about to be released via Dessous Recordings later this spring, which seems to be his most mainstream fitting work so far. At the same miles away from "going Pop" he perfectly fuses sweet vocal tunes voiced by the likes of Liora, Data MC, Mary Hype, Erlend Oye and others , influences from BrokenHouse, (Westlondon) Phusion and NeoSoul with DeepHouse-related balearic vibes on CD 1, wandering the thin line between lounge and dancefloor - serving a cool, laid back album that'll be on heavy rotation throughout this summer. In opposite to this CD 2, only available as limited edition Bonus CD, features an exclusive DJ-mix by Phonique himself, taking care of his more club-flavored, dancefloor-orientated tracks of late including his excellent banger "John" bringing in a bit of late nite vibez while serving a musical range from DeepHouse via NeoDetroit'ish tunes to Minimal of today. Defo one to check out - not only for lovers of Dessous Recordings recent releases but as well for those looking for an album that builds a bridge between pre-clubbing and primetime "rave" affairs.

Minorlabel have put out their 23rd release recently, which is a 16 track Various Artists compilation under the name of "Minority". With artists like triPhaze, Jakin Boaz, Tremor, LXC, Orchha, The Tleilaxu Music Machine and several others under its roof, this compilation mainly deals with styles like Dark Ambient, Experimental Electronics and more Rhythm Industrial'esque stuff for late night listening experiences. Dark sci-fi athmopsheres, alienated sound experiments, static & surface noise, psyched out frequencies and buzzing feedbacks are all to be found here and defo enjoyable for a musically trained expert used to styles like Illbient or whatever one might name it. Check.

Although yet released in october 2006 the promo of Alphacut Records 005 sat in my postbox only a few days ago waiting for a review. Side A sees Society Suckers & MZE team up for a "Fight" , a massive ultra-ravey Choppage vs. DarkJungle weapon that is surely about to devastate dancefloors and transform a hyper crowd into a mad moshpit. Defo a track that sticks out of the mass of hard, beat-fuckage Drum'n'Bass-whatever related tracks which seem to be so covertible these days as "Fight" is unique due to it's rave signals, athmosphere and of course that funny, swing outro which'll puzzle many jocks. B1 sees Iaka and his tune "Noloop" editing drums to death and losing the dancefloor connection as this, although one might clearly recognize influences by labels like Reinforced, is a pure showcase of technical abilities. Anyway Cycom's "Down The Drain" on B2 does way better again as he delivers a proper, sharp DarkJungle-tune that is well fucked up when it comes to beat science and serves an alienated, sci-fi strings feeling as cold as early Source Direct, Ice Minus or Photek tunes.

Alphacute 001 is a collaborative 7" of Alphacut Records and Sozialistischer Plattenbau named "Pink Ponies versus Blue Bytes" featuring four tracks by Frederik Schikowski, Karl Marx Stadt, Error 23 and LXC. What to expect from that musically ? File under: Nintendo-Gabber, LoFi-Hardcore and nerdy 8Bit-Core for egghead dancefloors. Fuckin' funny, dat. Seen?

Breakbeat Science is back on track and about to release their next 12" in may. Responsible for cat.no. 025 is Aperture which provides the tunes "Need You Here" and "Sleeping Giant", both to be filed under the flag "classic" - not: dated ! - timeless Drum'n'Bass of the once named "Intelligent" kind well fitting in between Omni Trio's alltime favorite album "The Haunted Science" and labels like Good Looking / Looking Good in their heydays. Not what you'd expect to hear in yr average rave night out but excellent for tiny, intimate full spectrum of Drum'n'Bass clubnights.

Straight from the Ghetto - News on HipHop, pt. 23

Booty Luv's anthemic Vocal-/ DiscoHouse tune "Boogie 2nite" on Hed Kandi / Ministry Of Sound has seen a second, so-called Urban edition 12" which basically means that several producers have put those trademark, stickin'-in-yer-ear-for-ages vocals on top of HipHop-/Urban-related beats by producers like Teddy-O which delivers the best version compared to the awful "R'N B Edit" although there's been no need for these versions at all. For all House-jock's there's still the "DB Boulevard Club Mix" as B2 version here which has been as well featured on the original 12".

Redman's new 12" "Put It Down" taken from his forthcoming album "Red Gone Wild" has been put on promo circuit by Def Jam recently and happens to be a heavy hitter. Straightforward beats are banging as there's nah tomorrow and the master spits as tight as tight can. Nuffink to say nah more - pick that up from yr local recordstore.

Another second edition is the new 12" of Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good" on Universal Music, which - apart from the Original Version - delivers new mixes by the likes of Skeewiff, Ghostface Killah and German HipHop-outlet Fettes Brot (sic!). While both first mentioned artists do stick close to the original in their versions Fettes Brot do add a bit of Reggae-flava and change the whole tracks athmosphere due to these new ingredients. Quality.

Parts in the post, pt. 57

Tilt Recordings, Mannheim's if not Germany's Techno Drum'n'Bass-imprint No. 1, have put their 6th release on promo circuit recently. A-side features the track "Steam" by Amex & Kaiza, based upon sampled steam sounds of an oldskool train running and nervous beats similar to what was popular beatwise around 2000/1 on several San Francisco-based labels like Phunckateck or or Phylum. Biggest surprise contained in this tool'ish tune is the 2nd breakdown which is not another drop but features some german, Schlager-like lyrics (sung by the producers?). On the flip we've got Budoka's "Pleasure Ride, a deep technoid roller paying respect to the good old days when technoid Drum'n'Bass was not necessarily filed as Neurofunk. Features the well-known - at least known to those being into early 90's Hardcore / Gabba - vocal sample "What's your pleasure, mister? The box..." which adds a bit of fun and happiness, too.

Under The Influence Of Giants is nothing but a shit name for a band, calling their debut single "Mama's Room" does not make things better and singing about having sex in moms bedroom is not that individual as it seems to them. But anyway - all three remixes by Richard Vision featured on side A are functional and work well with a more commercial ElectroHouse crowd, coming up with a crossover of the named genre and a bit of 80's Pop plus some Wave and Disco, too. Maybe this promo on Island Records has a short half-life period, but a bit of hit-like music is useful from time to time. And btw - forget about the B-Side coze that's too much Pop'n'Candy.

The Scissor Sisters have put out their recent track "She's My Man" as limited collectors edition on Polydor UK these days. A square-shaped picture 8" is always a nice and decent addition to every collector's archive but as long as the music contained is so similar to things like "Like Ice In The Sunshine" it ain't worth a dime, which is a pity if one regards to what a lavish physical production this record is.

Another release on Polydor is Feist's 10" "My Moon My Man". While the original tune is a bit of Jazz-flavored Easy Listening meets Downbeat the remix by Hamburg-based production team Boyz Noize takes this to a more epic, DeepHouse-flavored level and reach a certain kind of dancefloor functionality with their rework. Flipsidewise we've got "The Water" as official Album version plus 2001 Four-Track-Demo - a pure Jazz tune just based upon Feist's vocals and acoustic arrangements perfectly fitting for small bar-/cafe-lounges and NuJazz-venues.

Longplay love 48.0

The trinity of Doc. AtmosfearCrush, Tomahawk and Machete a.k.a. Boing & Peng is responsible for "The Unmasked Comedia" , cat.no. 026 of Super Six Goodies, a ten tracks journey into the realm of deep, hypnotic, intelligent ClubTechno. All tunes deliver a certain kind auf trippyness that hasn't be heard in technoid music for quite a while and brings back a feeling of floating through multicolored worlds of 3D animations - anyone out here remembering the legendary X-Mix-Series that used to set standards in video art in the 90s? Due to this and quality production a release worthy to check out.. Nice.

Spitting Off Tall Buildings are about to release their second - and last as well as the band's going to split - album under the name of "Good Night And Good Luck" via Exile On Mainstream on May 11th, a longplayer that is best to be filed under the flag of noise-influenced PowerPop: Melodic, epic but still fueled with a certain kind of distortion when it comes to their wall of sound-like guitars. Although all ten songs unite fragility and power, melancholia and anger plus there is a recurrent theme that rounds out the picture of the album as a whole which is a proper one anyway I wonder if anybody will miss Spitting Off Tall Buildings for anything but their name as there are numerous bands around of a similar sound.

Another album scheduled for May 11th is Neurosis' upcoming "Given To The Rising", which is due to be released via Neurot Recordings on this date. Ten songs within 71 minutes of the blackest, most evil slow psyched-out Southern Rock around that is surely able to darken the sun on the brightest summer day of which especially the 5 minutes intro of "At The End Of The Road" serves some of the most grinding, nail-biting music this extreme genre has ever seen. Able to cause a severe trauma if played to unstable, labile persons. A true statement and due to that a great album.
